The wait is almost over for fans of the tense spy series Tehran. The third season of the Apple TV thriller is set to premiere on January 9, 2026. To prepare for the new episodes, here is a complete breakdown of the complex and high-stakes events that left Mossad agent Tamar Rabinyan stranded and betrayed in Iran.
Tehran Season 3 will debut with one episode on January 9, followed by new episodes every Friday through February 27, 2026. The new season has already been filmed and the show has been renewed for a fourth season, which is currently in production.
Where Season 2 Began: Tamar’s Mission of Survival and Revenge
Season 2 picked up right where the first season ended. Tamar Rabinyan, the Mossad hacker-agent played by Niv Sultan, had failed her mission to disable Iran’s air defenses. Stranded in Tehran, she was hiding with her ally Milad while being hunted by both Iranian forces and her own people. What started as a simple fight for survival quickly turned into a personal quest for vengeance.
Early in the season, Tamar’s aunt, Arezoo, was executed. Tamar blamed this on General Qasem Mohammadi, a powerful figure in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. Mossad saw an opportunity and gave Tamar a final mission: assassinate the General. This order gave her a clear goal, but her motives became deeply personal.
Tamar was not just doing this for Mossad anymore; she was out for revenge.
To get close to Mohammadi, Tamar infiltrated his inner circle by befriending his son, Peyman, and Peyman’s friend, Vahid. Her mission was complicated by the arrival of a new Mossad operative, Marjan Montazeri, played by Glenn Close. Marjan acted as a therapist and handler, directing operations from the shadows and adding a new layer of tension and uncertainty.
The Relentless Pursuit by Faraz Kamali
On the other side of the conflict was Faraz Kamali, an investigator for the Revolutionary Guard played by Shaun Toub. Faraz remained singularly focused on capturing Tamar, convinced she was a key to uncovering larger plots against the state. His professional dedication, however, came at a great personal cost.
His home life was crumbling. His wife, Nahid, played by Shila Ommi, was struggling with severe trauma after being abducted and released by Mossad in the previous season. Marjan Montazeri inserted herself into this dynamic by becoming Nahid’s therapist, creating a dangerous psychological web that further entangled Faraz. Despite the pressure from all sides, Faraz never stopped his investigation, growing increasingly suspicious of Tamar’s true target.
A Season of Failed Plans and Tragic Consequences
Tamar’s attempts to assassinate General Mohammadi were fraught with failure and unintended fallout. Her plans included:
- A failed poisoning attempt.
- A scheme involving a booby-trapped mobile phone.
- An operation to take control of the General’s sports car during a race.
This final plan went terribly wrong and resulted in the tragic death of Peyman, Mohammadi’s own son. This event was a turning point. It devastated Mohammadi, shattered Tamar’s access to him, and sent shockwaves through every character’s story. The incident made Mossad’s leadership in Tel Aviv nervous about the political fallout, and they decided to call off the mission entirely.
However, Marjan, operating on the ground, chose to lie. She told Tamar and Milad that the mission was still active. This deception pushed the already strained team toward a desperate and bloody conclusion.
The Finale: A Bloody Climax and Major Betrayals
The Season 2 finale, titled “Blood Funeral,” brought all the tension to a head at Peyman’s funeral. With Mossad officially ordering a stand-down, Tamar and Milad decided to act alone. In the chaos, Tamar succeeded in killing General Mohammadi.
The victory was hollow and catastrophic. Mossad, seeking to tie up loose ends, had planted a bomb in Tamar and Milad’s getaway car. Milad was killed in the explosion. Tamar was left completely alone in Tehranโher mission accomplished, but her ally dead, her cover blown, and her own agency now viewing her as a rogue liability.
The finale also resolved other key storylines. Faraz’s wife, Nahid, poisoned Marjan Montazeri in retaliation for the manipulation and pain she caused their family. Faraz himself was left to deal with the political and personal wreckage of the season’s events, with Iranian authorities closing in.

Where Season 3 Begins: A Rogue Agent’s Fight for Survival
The new season starts with Tamar in the most dangerous position possible. She has gone rogue, and Mossad has marked her for death for disobeying orders. She is grieving the loss of Milad and has no allies left in Tehran. Her primary goal is no longer completing a mission, but simple survival. To live, she must find a way to “reinvent herself and win back the Mossad’s support”.
Season 3 introduces a major new character and actor to the series. Hugh Laurie joins the cast as Eric Peterson, a South African nuclear inspector. Early episode synopses indicate that Peterson gets into serious trouble during an audit in Iran, and his path will collide with Tamar’s desperate struggle.
The cast also includes returning stars Shaun Toub and Shila Ommi, alongside new additions Sasson Gabai, Phoenix Raei, and Bahar Pars. The season will consist of eight episodes.
