The future of Netflix’s gritty Western drama, The Abandons, hangs in the balance after its explosive first season finale. All seven episodes of the show dropped on Netflix on December 4, 2025. The series stars Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey as two rival matriarchs locked in a violent land war in 1850s Washington Territory. While the season ended on a massive cliffhanger, Netflix has not yet announced if the story will continue with a second season.

The Official Renewal Status

As of early December 2025, Netflix has not renewed The Abandons for a second season. The streaming service has also not canceled the show, leaving its fate officially undecided. This is a typical waiting period for Netflix, which usually assesses a new show’s performance based on viewership numbers, completion rates, and audience engagement in the weeks following its release.

The decision for a second season is further complicated by production changes that occurred during the making of the first season. The show’s original creator, Kurt Sutter, exited the production before filming finished due to reported creative differences with Netflix. This behind-the-scenes shift has led some industry observers to question its potential long-term impact on the series’ future.

The Cliffhanger That Demands Answers

The entire first season builds toward a brutal confrontation between Fiona Nolan (Lena Headey) and Constance Van Ness (Gillian Anderson). The finale sees the Van Ness family estate set ablaze, with the two leaders battling inside the burning building. The season concludes with a single, unidentified silhouette emerging from the flames, leaving the survival of Fiona or Constance as the show’s central mystery.

โ€œIโ€™m not going to answer that question. โ€ฆ I have a feeling about how it ought to go, but I donโ€™t want to, in any way, tip my hand. Clearly, one person survives, maybe two people survive, [but] which one that is, and whether itโ€™s one or two โ€” all of those things are up in the air. And thatโ€™s the fun,โ€ said executive producer Chris Keyser about the finale.

This unresolved ending is the primary reason fans are calling for more story. The actors themselves have hinted at their hopes for a continuation. In a recent interview, Lena Headey teased, “Ferocity unleashed, I reckon, in season 2”.

What Could Happen In A Potential Second Season?

If Netflix gives the green light, a second season would immediately need to address the fate of its lead characters. The answer of who survived the fireโ€”Fiona, Constance, or bothโ€”would define the new power dynamics in the frontier town of Angel’s Ridge. The destruction of the Van Ness estate and the weakening of both families would likely create a power vacuum, inviting new antagonists or outside forces to threaten Jasper Hollow.

Several other character storylines are poised to continue. The forbidden romance between Constance’s daughter, Trisha Van Ness, and Fiona’s adopted son, Elias Teller, ended the season in jeopardy but remains a key emotional thread. The future of Miles Alderton, whose scheming was exposed, and the journey of Dahlia Nolan, who endured significant trauma, would also be central to a new chapter.

Fan Reaction And Renewal Chances

Since its release, viewer reaction online has been vocal, with many fans reporting they binge-watched the entire season and are demanding a sequel. This audience demand is a critical factor Netflix considers. However, the show has received a mixed response from critics, which adds uncertainty to its renewal prospects.

The fact that The Abandons was not marketed as a limited series and deliberately ended with an open, unfinished story suggests the creators had more narrative in mind. For now, the show’s future depends entirely on the data Netflix is currently gathering about how many people started the show, how many finished it, and how much buzz it is generating.
