The trailer for A24’s historical drama The Brutalist is out, offering a glimpse into a gripping story set in 1947. Starring Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones, the film explores the challenges faced by its protagonists as they navigate their new lives in America after fleeing post-war Europe. The trailer showcases a star-studded cast that includes Joe Alwyn, Emma Laird, Vanessa Kirby, and Stacy Martin. Since its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where it garnered the Silver Lion for Best Director for Brady Corbet, anticipation for the film has only grown.

CHECK IT OUT:

Plot Overview

The Brutalist follows László Toth, played by Brody, a Hungarian architect who relocates to the United States in search of the American Dream. However, his arrival in America is not as he had imagined. The film tells the story of Toth’s struggles with his career, relationships, and social-political status during a transformative time in history. The official synopsis reveals that László and his wife, Erzsébet (portrayed by Jones), escape their troubled past in Europe to rebuild their lives in America. However, their journey takes an unexpected turn when they encounter a mysterious and wealthy client.

The title, The Brutalist, is inspired by the architectural movement known for its bold, concrete structures. This choice may reflect the obstacles that László faces throughout his life and career. The film’s runtime is notably extensive, lasting three hours and 35 minutes. Despite this length, it has not faced any criticism regarding pacing or engagement, suggesting that audiences have found the narrative compelling.

Critical Reception

Since its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), The Brutalist has received praise from critics, holding a remarkable 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Director Brady Corbet shared insights into the filmmaking process in an interview with Variety. He stated, “We cut every corner we could to make sure that every single cent was onscreen.” He went on to explain that the project involved a significant commitment of time and effort, describing it as a “Herculean effort.” Corbet emphasized the challenges faced during production, noting, “I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, because it was just years and years of essentially working for free.”

Critics have lauded the film for its thematic depth. Ross Bonaime from Collider highlighted that while it plays with familiar themes, Corbet’s unique vision elevates it to a “wholly original and unique” experience. The combination of strong performances and a thought-provoking storyline suggests that The Brutalist is more than just a standard historical drama.

Release Details OF The Brutalist

The Brutalist is set to hit theaters on December 20, 2024. With its impressive cast and captivating storyline, it is expected to attract a wide audience, including fans of historical dramas and those interested in architecture and design.
