A24 has revealed the first trailer for The Death of Robin Hood, presenting a version of the hero audiences have never seen. Starring Hugh Jackman, the film is a dark thriller that reimagines the famous outlaw as an older man crushed by the weight of his violent past. Directed by Michael Sarnoski, the movie is set for release in 2026.

A Gritty New Vision for a Classic Hero

This is not the cheerful Robin Hood of adventure stories. The trailer shows a wounded, weary man living with terrible regret. The official description states the film follows Robin Hood as he deals with “his past after a life of crime and murder”. Badly hurt after a fight, he is found by a mysterious woman who offers him a path to redemption.

The movie’s bold tagline, “He Was No Hero,” makes its perspective clear. Director Michael Sarnoski explained his interest in exploring the gap between legend and reality. He told Entertainment Weekly he wanted to examine “someone who was going through that in their lifetime, and trying to grapple with the role of storytelling and their actual identity”. In the trailer, Jackman’s Robin Hood says, “People speak of Robin Hood, tell his storiesโ€ฆ they’re all lies”.

Hugh Jackman’s Transformation and Powerful Cast

Hugh Jackman appears completely different in this role. He plays an older, “grizzled” version of the character, marked by years of conflict. The performance has been compared to his celebrated work in Logan, where he also played an aged, weary warrior. In a haunting moment from the trailer, his character confesses, “I’ve killed so many, I could not give you a count. It’s a curse”.

He leads a strong cast. Jodie Comer plays the mysterious woman who finds and cares for the injured Robin. Bill Skarsgรฅrd takes on the role of Little John. The film also features Murray Bartlett and Noah Jupe. The project reunites Jupe with director Sarnoski, who previously directed him in A Quiet Place: Day One.

Behind the Scenes with Director Michael Sarnoski

Michael Sarnoski wrote and directed the film. He is known for creating deep character stories within unique settings. His first film, Pig, starring Nicolas Cage, earned major critical praise. He followed that with the successful thriller A Quiet Place: Day One. His involvement signaled that this Robin Hood story would be a serious character study.

The movie was filmed in Northern Ireland in early 2025. Sarnoski chose to shoot on 35mm film, which gives the footage a classic, textured look. The production is a collaboration between Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company. The studio A24, known for its distinctive films, acquired the U.S. distribution rights and released the trailer.

Release Plans and Global Distribution

While the trailer confirms the movie is “coming soon,” a specific opening date has not been announced. It is scheduled to arrive in theaters sometime in 2026. A24 will handle the release in the United States. For audiences in the United Kingdom and Ireland, True Brit Entertainment will manage the release.

The trailer’s arrival has started conversations among fans online. Many note the stark difference from past Robin Hood movies and are interested in Jackman’s serious take on the role. The film joins other major projects on A24’s 2026 schedule, which includes new films featuring stars like Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Anne Hathaway.
