A new television series turns a routine flight into a nightmare scenario for a small Alaskan town. The Last Frontier, which debuted on Apple TV+ on October 10, 2025, begins with a prison transport plane crashing in the remote wilderness, setting dozens of dangerous inmates free. The show’s co-creator, Jon Bokenkamp, describes the concept as a “prison break at 30,000 feet,” launching a tense survival story in one of the world’s most unforgiving environments.

The Show’s High-Altitude Premise

The Last Frontier follows Frank Remnick, a U.S. Marshal played by Jason Clarke, who is suddenly tasked with handling a major crisis in his quiet Alaskan district. When a plane carrying inmates crashes, it results in multiple fugitives escaping into the wild. Frank must now protect his community from this new threat while investigating the crash itself.

The idea for the series came from co-creators Jon Bokenkamp and Richard D’Ovidio. In an interview, Bokenkamp shared that they had long considered a story about a prison transport plane landing and inmates escaping. Their original idea was set in a bustling city.

“My dear friend Richard Dโ€™Ovidio and I, years ago, were kicking around an idea of what would happen if a prison transport plane like this landed in Manhattan, and all these inmates escaped,” Bokenkamp said. However, they later decided a more isolated location would be far more compelling. Moving the crash to the Alaskan wilderness introduced a brutal survival element for both the escaped inmates and the local marshal who has to confront them.

“We say in the show, itโ€™s like a Prison Break at 30,000 feet,” Bokenkamp said.

Meet the Characters in the Crisis

The series features an ensemble cast dealing with the fallout of the crash from different angles. Jason Clarke leads as Frank Remnick, the supervisory deputy U.S. Marshal for the district of Alaska. Frank is a capable leader, but the scale of this emergency pushes him beyond his usual experiences.

The crash frees several prisoners, but one is of particular interest to the CIA: Levi Taylor ‘Havlock’ Hartman, played by Dominic Cooper. Havlock was a covert CIA asset being transported on the flight, and his escape triggers a major intervention from the agency. The CIA dispatches Sidney Scofield (Haley Bennett), Havlock’s former handler, to Alaska to help locate him.

The cast also includes Simone Kessell as Sarah Remnick, Frank’s wife and a local nurse who finds herself on the front lines of the crisis. Alfre Woodard plays Jacqueline Bradford, a CIA official and Scofield’s superior. The show also features actors like Johnny Knoxville and Clifton Collins Jr. as some of the other escaped convicts now loose in Alaska.

A Story of Survival and Community

Relocating the story from a city to the remote Alaskan landscape fundamentally changed the narrative. The setting becomes a character in itself, presenting the challenge of survival in a harsh, frozen environment. The inmates are not just escaping into a city where they can disappear into a crowd; they are thrust into a fight for survival against the elements.

This setting also highlights the theme of community. The show explores how the small, close-knit town comes together in the face of a shared emergency. Frank Remnick is not just a lawman; he is part of the community he is striving to protect. His wife, Sarah, embodies this spirit as a nurse caring for the injured. Simone Kessell, who plays Sarah, noted the importance of showing strong women, stating, “Itโ€™s an absolute privilege and honor, because the women in the show are incredibly strong.”

The production aimed for authenticity by filming in freezing conditions, with the cast enduring temperatures as low as -25ยฐF (-31ยฐC) to capture the authentic feel of an Alaskan winter.

The Mystery of the Atwater Protocol

While the initial plot driver is the plane crash and prison break, the story quickly deepens with a conspiracy. The hunt for the escaped inmate Havlock reveals a secret CIA program known as the Atwater Protocol. This fictional program was a black ops project that created false defectors to draw out enemies of the state.

Havlock was one of these recruited assets, but he has since gone rogue, turning the CIA’s own fabricated threat into a real one. His escape with classified information puts the entire program at risk, forcing the CIA to send its own agents to Alaska to contain the situation. This larger conspiracy ensures that the crash was not a simple accident, but potentially part of a much larger and more dangerous plan.
