Jennifer Garner returns as Hannah Hall in the long-awaited second season of Apple TV+’s gripping thriller, and the premiere episode throws viewers right back into the danger that has been lurking beneath the surface for half a decade. The episode, titled “Cape Codd,” picks up the story five years after the events of Season 1, but quickly reveals that while Hannah and her stepdaughter Bailey (Angourie Rice) have built a new life, the past has never stopped hunting them .
The Season 2 premiere, which dropped on February 20, 2026, delivers exactly what the title of this article suggests: Hannah’s carefully constructed, years-long escape plan finally activates when the Campano crime family makes their move . But the episode does much more than just showcase a thrilling chase sequence. It weaves together multiple timelines, introduces new characters with deep connections to the family’s past, and shows exactly what Owen Michaels (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) has been doing during his five years in hiding .
The Episode Opens With Owen on a Dangerous Mission
The premiere doesn’t waste any time catching up with the man who set this entire story in motion. Five days before the Season 1 epilogue, Owen is deep undercover, living in a nondescript trailer park and working at a harbor. But he isn’t just laying low and waiting for things to blow over. He is on a reckless mission that he believes will finally earn his freedom .
Owen is secretly gathering evidence against Teddy Campano, whom he suspects of running a trafficking operation for the family business. Sneaking around the harbor’s container yard at night, Owen snaps photos of Teddy meeting with a professional collaborator. It looks like a solo mission driven by desperation, but the episode reveals that Owen actually has a partner .
US Marshal Grady Bradford (Augusto Aguilera) is working with Owen. The two men share the same goal of bringing down the Campano crime syndicate. Owen has cut a deal with the law enforcement agent: he provides the evidence connecting the crime family to the shipping company Rafina, and Grady handles the legal side of taking them down. Owen believes that eliminating the Campano threat is the only way to ensure his family can finally be safe. But working undercover so close to the enemy carries enormous risk, and word of a nosy harbor worker asking questions eventually reaches the Campanos, setting the stage for the danger that will soon find Hannah and Bailey .
A Birthday Party Leads to a Dangerous New Connection
Back in the relative safety of their new life, Hannah and Bailey are attending the birthday party of Nicholas Bell (David Morse), Bailey’s maternal grandfather. The party seems like a normal family gathering until Hannah spots someone in the crowd that makes her blood run cold: a member of the Campano family is among the guests .
Hannah quickly ushers Bailey out of the party, but not before Bailey manages to grab a folder of old photographs from her uncle Charlie. The photos are of her mother Katherine, and many of them feature Katherine’s longtime best friend. That friend turns out to be none other than Quinn Campano, now going by the name Quinn Faverau and played by new cast member Judy Greer .
Quinn is something of a black sheep in her crime family. She has pursued a career in law and distanced herself from the Campano criminal operations . Despite this, Bailey becomes immediately interested in learning more about the woman who was once her mother’s closest friend. Hannah is understandably wary. The idea of her daughter talking to any Campano, even one who has supposedly left the family business, terrifies her .
Bailey ends up sneaking away to meet Quinn on her own. Their first meeting at a coffee shop goes surprisingly well. Quinn tells Bailey all about her memories of Katherine, offering the teenager a precious connection to the mother she barely remembers. For Bailey, who has only vague memories to hold onto, this conversation provides a helpful and deeply personal perspective on who her mother really was. When Bailey finally tells Hannah about the secret meeting, her stepmother is understanding, even if the situation makes her nervous. But by then, Hannah has her own problems to deal with .
Hannah’s Years of Paranoia Prove Justified
The past five years have fundamentally changed Hannah. Even with the protection agreement she made with Nicholas, she has never stopped looking over her shoulder. Every stranger on the street could be a Campano soldier. Every unexpected knock on the door could signal the end of everything she has built .
Hannah has spent half a decade preparing for the worst. She installed a comprehensive security system in her house. She regularly attends self-defense classes. Most importantly, she secretly procured a knife and keeps it hidden, ready for use if the worst-case scenario ever arrives. For a long time, she began to wonder if her paranoia was unnecessary, if perhaps the danger had truly passed .
Then the dreaded moment arrives.
As Hannah is leaving her house one morning, a man approaches her under a false pretext, claiming there is a gas leak that needs attention. Before she can react, he attacks her and forces her back inside her own home. His plan is to abduct her, to force her into a waiting car and deliver her to the Campanos .
But the man did not know about Hannah’s five years of preparation.
She fights back with everything she has. Using the secret blade she has kept hidden for just such an occasion, Hannah stabs her attacker. The sudden pain and surprise give her the split second she needs to break free and escape from the house .
Her escape plan activates instantly. She races against time to reach Bailey before the Campanos’ hired men can get to her daughter. When Bailey sees her mother’s bedraggled state, covered in blood and terror, she understands immediately that their worst fears have come true. The mother-daughter duo runs, managing to shake off the mobsters on their trail and fleeing with their lives .
Following a Mysterious Message to Cape Codd
Hannah’s plan for survival is one she has clearly thought through many times. She and Bailey withdraw all the cash from a secret bank vault they maintain for emergencies. Instead of using credit cards or staying in predictable places that would leave an electronic trail, they will move constantly, hopping from one cheap motel to another .
But the first location Hannah chooses is no random rest stop. Earlier that day, just before the attack, she received a strange text message from an anonymous sender. The message warned her of danger and specifically mentioned Cape Codd .
Hannah remembers Cape Codd well. She and Owen stayed at the Cape Codd Inn during one of their vacations as a couple, back before everything fell apart. She becomes convinced that Owen is the one who sent the message, that her husband is trying to guide her and Bailey to a place where they can find answers or safety .
Bailey is confused and frustrated. She does not understand why they would follow any instructions that might involve Owen, the man whose secrets and lies put them in this position in the first place. But Hannah needs answers, and Cape Codd is the only lead she has .
While en route, Hannah receives an unexpected phone call from Charlie. He delivers devastating news: Nicholas Bell has died of a heart attack. The protection that Nicholas provided, the deal that kept the Campanos at bay, is now gone. That is why the crime family felt comfortable enough to move against Hannah immediately after his death .
When Hannah finally arrives at the Cape Codd Inn, someone does come to meet her. But it is not Owen. Standing before her is his collaborator, US Marshal Grady Bradford .

New Faces and Familiar Returns This Season
Season 2 brings back the core cast while introducing several significant new characters. Jennifer Garner leads the series as Hannah, delivering what one reviewer called her strongest performance in the series, showing a woman who is no longer operating on adrenaline but calculating risk in real time . Angourie Rice returns as Bailey, and her character takes on a more prominent role this season, challenging the adults around her with her intelligence and emotional maturity .
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has a much more substantial presence as Owen this season, actively contributing to the storyline rather than remaining a distant memory . David Morse returns as Nicholas Bell, though his role in this season is unfortunately cut short by his character’s death in the premiere.
The most talked-about new addition is Judy Greer as Quinn Faverau, the Campano family member who has chosen a different path. Garner personally suggested Greer for the role, and the longtime friends reunited on screen after working together on 13 Going on 30 . Greer brings a precision to her performance that cuts through the show’s quieter moments . Other new cast members include John Noble as family patriarch Frank Campano, Luke Kirby as his reckless son Teddy Campano, and Rita Wilson as Hannah’s estranged mother Carol .
The series continues to be produced by 20th Television and Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, with creators Laura Dave and Josh Singer returning as executive producers alongside Garner and Witherspoon . The second season is based on Dave’s sequel novel, The First Time I Saw Him, which was released in January 2026 .

What the Premiere Sets Up for the Rest of the Season
The Season 2 premiere establishes several threads that will likely unfold over the coming weeks. Owen’s undercover work against the Campanos puts him in extreme danger, and his connection to Grady Bradford suggests that law enforcement is finally building a real case against the crime family. But the news of a nosy harbor worker reaching the Campanos means Owen’s cover may already be blown .
Bailey’s new connection to Quinn opens up a complicated path forward. Quinn may hold keys to understanding Katherine’s past and, by extension, the full scope of why the Campanos are so invested in the Bell family. But trusting any Campano, even one who claims to have left the family, carries obvious risks .
Nicholas Bell’s death removes the shield that protected Hannah and Bailey for five years. With him gone, the Campanos feel free to move against them directly. Hannah’s escape plan bought them time, but they are now fugitives in their own right, hunted by a powerful crime family with unlimited resources .
The episode ends with Grady Bradford meeting Hannah at the Cape Codd Inn. His presence there confirms that Owen is indeed working behind the scenes, trying to protect his family from the shadows. But whether Grady can be trusted, and whether his partnership with Owen will actually lead to safety for Hannah and Bailey, remains very much in question .
The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2 is now streaming on Apple TV+ with new episodes arriving every Friday.
