What to Expect in “The Sensitive Kind”
The Sensitive Kind is the eighth and final episode of the show’s first season. The season has followed Ethan Hawke as Lee Raybon, a used book dealer and citizen journalist in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Lee starts investigating the death of a local man named Dale Washberg, convinced that his death was not a suicide and that a cover-up is happening.
His search for the truth pulls him into a dangerous web of corruption involving the powerful Washberg family, law enforcement, and ex-convicts. The previous episode, Episode 7, ended with a intense church standoff where Lee, with nothing left to lose, tried to stop a wave of white supremacist violence and expose the whole conspiracy. The showdown nearly cost him his life.
Creator Sterlin Harjo and star Ethan Hawke have both talked about the finale. Hawke said,
“As the person who jumped off a cliff with him, not knowing where the story was goingโฆ one of the things that makes me so happy is how the show ends. Itโs one of my favorite things Iโve ever done, the finale of this series. Itโs extremely satisfying, and you want to see where the hero goes next.”
The finale is expected to answer the big questions about the conspiracy while also focusing on the core relationship of the show: the one between Lee and his daughter, Francis.
The Heart of the Show: A Father and His Daughter
While the show is a crime drama, the central story is the father-daughter dynamic between Lee and Francis. Harjo has explained that this relationship is the emotional core of the series, exploring the challenge of pursuing your passion while trying to be a good parent.
Ethan Hawke echoed this, noting, “Francis, his daughter, is the future. Sheโs the reason heโs doing it all. At the same time, sometimes the behavior is hurting her. That collision is the stuff of real life.”
A Strong Cast and Creative Team
The Lowdown was created by Sterlin Harjo, the mind behind the acclaimed series Reservation Dogs. The show mixes dark comedy with southern drama and a crime story.
Alongside Ethan Hawke, the series features a strong cast including Jeanne Tripplehorn, Kyle MacLachlan, Tim Blake Nelson, and Keith David. The show has been praised for its gritty feel and Hawke’s performance as a man who is not afraid to get beaten up in his quest for the truth.
