The first season of Taylor Sheridan’s drama The Madison wrapped up on March 21, leaving viewers with a clear answer about where the Clyburn family stands. After six episodes of grief, difficult choices, and the pull of Montana’s wide-open spaces, the finale delivered a decisive moment for Michelle Pfeiffer’s character, Stacy Clyburn. While the rest of the family returned to their New York City lives, Stacy made a bold choice to stay in the place where she felt closest to her late husband.

The show follows the wealthy Clyburn family from Manhattan as they deal with the sudden death of family patriarch Preston Clyburn (Kurt Russell) and his brother Paul in a plane crash. What was meant to be a short trip to Montana to handle funeral arrangements turned into a deeper journey of self-discovery for each family member.

The Family Returns to New York But Stacy Cannot Settle

After Preston’s burial in Montana’s Madison River Valley, the Clyburn family returned to their Manhattan home, expecting to resume their normal lives. But nothing felt normal anymore. Abigail (Beau Garrett) tried to reconnect with her ex-husband Dallas, who suddenly wanted to play the devoted father. Paige (Elle Chapman) returned to her office job only to overhear a colleague say her father “deserved to crash” because he used a private plane. The comment led Paige to punch her coworker, landing her in a situation with police that required her mother’s help to resolve.

Russell (Patrick J. Adams) , Paige’s husband, tried to keep things together while also figuring out his own future. He shared drinks with Stacy at a bar and talked about wanting to move to the suburbs and start a family. But Stacy admitted that the dream she once had with Preston was over.

Stacy struggled the most with being back in the city. The apartment felt emptier without Preston. Every corner held memories she was not ready to face. Her best friend Liliana (Rebecca Spence) convinced her to see a therapist, Dr. Phil Yorn (Will Arnett) . At first, Stacy hated his approach and his sweaters. But eventually, she opened up. Dr. Yorn gave her simple but powerful advice: she needed to give herself permission to choose what she wanted, without worrying about what others thought.

The Memorial That Changed Everything

Liliana organized a memorial for Preston at the Clyburn home, inviting all the important people from their New York social circle. But Stacy could not face it. She looked at the gathering filled with people Preston barely cared about and decided to leave. She slipped out, left her phone behind, and took a cab with no clear destination.

Hours passed. Her daughters grew worried. They searched local bars and called around, but no one could find her. Abigail eventually filed a missing person report with the police. The family feared the worst.

But Stacy had not harmed herself. She had done something none of them expected. She boarded a plane back to Montana.

Stacy Returns to Preston’s Grave

The next morning, Cade (Kevin Zegers) , the neighbor who helped the Clyburn family during their time in Montana, found Stacy sleeping next to Preston’s grave. She held a pistol in her hand, which immediately raised concerns. But Stacy explained she brought it for protection against wildlife, not for anything else. And for the first time since Preston died, she seemed at peace.

Cade asked what she planned to do. Stacy said she was staying. She asked him where she could buy clothes in Bozeman because she had left New York with nothing. She had made up her mind: Montana was where she belonged now. The ranch was where Preston’s memory lived, and she was not leaving it behind.

Beau Garrett, who plays Abigail, told Town & Country that the ending was not originally planned that way. “The end that we’d originally shot leads into season two, which I think works better,” she said, explaining that scripts for Sheridan’s shows often arrive at the last minute and change frequently.

What About Abby and Van’s Relationship

One of the season’s subplots involved Abigail and the local sheriff’s deputy Van Davis (Ben Schnetzer) . The two had clear chemistry, but their lives could not have been more different. Before leaving Montana, Abby and Van had a brutally honest conversation about their futures. Van laid out his reality: he makes $52,000 a year, has $12,000 in savings, and spends his autumn months hunting elk to fill his freezer. He told Abby he would never go to Europe, never lay on a beach, and definitely never visit New York.

Abby tried to convince him they could make it work anyway. But Van said he would rather miss her than spend his life wondering when she might leave. They broke up before their relationship truly began. The finale did not resolve their story, leaving the door open for what might happen if Abby returns to Montana.

The Real World Connection in the Finale

Sharp-eyed viewers noticed a scene in the finale that felt like a direct message from creator Taylor Sheridan. In one moment, a couple with California license plates drives through Montana while engaging in inappropriate behavior on the road. Sheriff Van pulls them over and makes sure to note their out-of-state plates. The scene felt like a nod to a real issue caused by Yellowstone’s popularity: people moving to Montana after seeing it on screen.

Luke Grimes, who starred in Yellowstone, previously told Joe Rogan that locals are not happy about the influx of newcomers, especially from California. He shared a story about friends visiting him in Montana who found “go back” written in the dust on their car. The finale’s scene seemed to acknowledge that tension.

Season 2 Is Already Filmed

For viewers wondering what comes next, there is good news. The Madison has already finished filming its second season. Production wrapped in December 2025, and the cast has confirmed they are ready for more. Elle Chapman shared on Instagram that filming for season 2 was complete.

Michelle Pfeiffer gave a hint about what season 2 will explore. She said it deals with “the messy and profound rebuilding of everything that you knew after everything that you knew has fallen apart.” Kurt Russell, who appears in flashbacks, added that the second season raises the stakes. “The level of real danger goes up,” he said. “Things begin to become dangerous in realistic ways.”

Director Christina Alexandra Voros, who directed every episode of season 1, will return for the next installment. She teased that season 2 will answer questions about what the Clyburn family does next now that Stacy has made her choice.

No official release date has been announced for season 2. But with production already complete, viewers likely will not have to wait too long.
