The fifth episode of The Night Manager Season 2 puts everyone in danger. Jonathan Pine’s secret identity is fully exposed to his main enemy. This single event starts a chain reaction of betrayal, violence, and shifting loyalties on two continents. The episode shows the high cost of the mission, with a key ally killed in London and another potential ally making a shocking, mysterious choice in Colombia.

Jonathan Pine’s Cover is Officially Compromised

The episode starts with the direct fallout from the previous week’s cliffhanger. Richard “Dickie” Roper has seen a photo confirming that the man helping his son, Teddy, is actually Jonathan Pine, the agent who trapped him years before. Roper immediately tells his powerful ally in British intelligence, Mayra Cavendish, to find and eliminate Pine’s support team in the UK.

Pine, on the run with Roxana Bolaños and a young driver named Octavio, hides at Roxana’s abandoned childhood home. Here, the strained trust between them breaks. Pine admits he has no backup team coming and no power to grant her the immunity he promised. Roxana feels used, realizing she risked her life for a plan built on lies. The tense moment highlights how alone Pine truly is as his cover dissolves.

A Tense and Personal Showdown Between Pine and Roper

Knowing hiding is useless, Pine takes a huge risk. He calls Roper directly and arranges a face-to-face meeting at a restaurant, asking him to come alone. The resulting lunch is a masterclass in tension. The two enemies, played by Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie, are outwardly civil but exchange thinly veiled threats.

Pine demands Roper surrender and expose his entire network. Roper refuses, instead offering Pine $50 million to walk away and forget everything. He claims the evidence against him is weak and would only make “page 7 in The Guardian”. Pine rejects the bribe, calling Roper a conman, and gives him an ultimatum: turn himself in or be destroyed. Unbeknownst to Roper, the private investigator Martín Álvarez secretly records the entire conversation.

“I have inexplicable affection for you,” Roper tells Pine during their lunch, a line that adds a complex, personal layer to their deadly rivalry.

Teddy Discovers His Father’s True Plans

Pine’s next move is a psychological play against Teddy Dos Santos. After arranging a meeting, Pine leaves a laptop for Teddy that plays a damning audio recording. Teddy hears his father, Roper, and his associate Sandy Langbourne talking about him. They call him uncivilized and discuss him as a disposable tool. The final blow is a recording where Roper refers to his other son, Danny, in England as his “only son and heir,” confirming he plans to abandon Teddy after the Colombian operation.

Devastated, Teddy first attacks Pine but then breaks down. To win him over completely, Pine reunites Teddy with his long-lost sister, Clara, in an emotional church meeting. This act of mercy turns Teddy. He secretly flips sides, sending Pine crucial information about the weapons shipment and the plane that will deliver it for the planned coup.

The Fatal Consequences in London: Basil’s Death

The danger from Pine’s exposed identity spreads instantly to England. Basil Karapetian, the MI6 tech expert who helped set up Pine’s mission, senses Mayra’s net closing around him. Before he can escape, he manages to stash a laptop full of evidence for Angela Burr to collect. However, he is captured by Mayra’s agents.

Basil is taken to a safe house, beaten, and interrogated. He bravely refuses to give up Pine or the operation. In a chilling final scene, Mayra visits him. After he partially confesses what he knows, she coldly thanks him for his sacrifice and declares, “Game over,” before ordering her men to kill him. Basil’s death is a major loss for Pine’s team and shows the extreme ruthlessness of their enemies in London.

Roxana’s Mysterious Decision and the Setup for the Finale

As pressure builds, paranoia grips Roper. He discovers a listening device attached to one of his guard dogs, revealing his compound is under surveillance. His security team chases Martín through the jungle, but he escapes. In a brutal display of rage, Roper then shoots his three dogs dead.

The episode ends with a major cliffhanger. Roxana Bolaños, who was told to stay hidden by Pine, walks back into Roper’s compound. She approaches Roper and his lawyer, seemingly defecting to their side. Roper threatens her gruesomely, warning that deception will result in her death. Roxana replies, “Well, now I know his name,” referring to Jonathan Pine. Her true motives are unclear—whether she is betraying Pine to save herself or attempting a dangerous double-cross to gather more evidence.

With Teddy now secretly helping Pine, and Roxana’s allegiance unknown, all the pieces are set for a dangerous finale. The plan involves intercepting the weapons plane, while in London, Angela Burr must use Basil’s evidence to confront the corruption within MI6.
