What Happens in Episode 4? Code Black and a Powerful Storyline
The new episode continues the real-time format, covering the 10:00 a.m. hour of a hectic Fourth of July shift. It starts right where Episode 3 ended: with the hospital declaring a Code Black.
A Code Black is a major emergency alert. In this case, a nearby hospital called Westbridge is closing due to an internal disaster. All of their ambulance traffic is being redirected to the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. This will flood the already busy ER with new patients, pushing Dr. Robby’s team to their limits.
Beyond the chaos, Episode 4 will feature a significant and emotional storyline. Series star Noah Wyle, who wrote this episode, included a plot about the 2018 attack on the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. The story follows a Jewish woman arriving at the hospital, dealing with trauma from the event. The episode highlights the solidarity between the local Jewish and Muslim communities after the tragedy.
โThat being such a significant event in the city of Pittsburgh, it seemed like a wonderful opportunity โฆ the aspects of it that moved me the most were the community outcry afterward from the Muslim community and the solidarity with the Jewish community,โ Wyle told Variety.
Executive producer R. Scott Gemmill added, โYou canโt do a medical show, set in Pittsburgh, with a Jewish doctor without addressing that โฆ The fact that the Muslim community came together and paid for all the funerals, thatโs the kind of information that needed to be out thereโ.
The Main Cast Returning for the Crisis
The core doctors and nurses from Season 1 return to navigate the Code Black. The main cast of The Pitt Season 2 includes:

- Patrick Ball as Dr. Frank Langdon, a senior resident returning from rehab.
- Katherine LaNasa as Dana Evans, the charge nurse who runs the department.
- Taylor Dearden as Dr. Melissa “Mel” King, who is nervously awaiting a legal deposition.

- Isa Briones as Dr. Trinity Santos, whose instincts are being tested.
- Gerran Howell as Dennis “Huckleberry” Whitaker, a fourth-year medical student.

Season 2 Production and Setting Notes
The second season picks up ten months after the events of Season 1. The entire 15-episode season documents one demanding 15-hour shift set over the Fourth of July weekend, a notoriously busy time for emergency rooms.
โThere are all sorts of creative accidents that happen on the Fourth of July,โ Noah Wyle told Deadline. โYouโve got fireworks, youโve got motor sports, youโve got water sports, youโve got all sorts of stuff going onโ.
Although the show is set in Pittsburgh, most filming takes place in Burbank, California. However, for Season 2, the production did film on location for several days at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh to capture authentic scenes.
