Jenny Han, the creator of the popular series The Summer I Turned Pretty, has shared a clear update on the much-talked-about movie. She confirmed the script is finished but revealed that cameras have not started rolling, managing expectations for fans hoping for a quick return to Cousins Beach.
During The Wrap’s 2025 Power Women Summit on December 2, Han gave a straightforward progress report. “I just wrote it,” Han stated. “We have not filmed anything yet”. This simple comment from the author and showrunner provides the most current status of the project, which Prime Video officially confirmed on September 17, 2025.
What Jenny Han Said About the Movie’s Progress
The update directly addresses and clarifies widespread fan speculation. A major theory among viewers suggested the movie might be released around the 2025 holiday season. This guess was fueled by the final moments of Season 3, which showed photos of Belly and Conrad celebrating Christmas together in Paris.
Han specifically mentioned this fan hope and set the record straight. “I know that everyone was hoping that it was coming out this Christmas,” she said, “but unfortunately, not happening, not possible”. She explained that the team was working on the series up to the last minute before its July 2025 premiere, leaving no time to produce a movie in between. Post-production for the show’s third season continued until just one month before it launched on Amazon Prime.
Why The Story is Ending With a Movie, Not Season 4
Followers of the show might wonder why Belly Conklin’s story is concluding with a movie instead of a fourth season. Han has explained her reasoning in previous interviews. She sees the film as a special event for the audience.
“I just see the movie as an opportunity to really just have fun and spend more time with these characters,” Han told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s a very complete kind of story. It’s not one that I would spend 10 episodes on, so I think [it’s to] give it more as a gift to the fans”.
The movie was announced by Prime Video on the same day the Season 3 finale premiered. In the official announcement, Han hinted at the story’s direction, saying, “There is another big milestone left in Bellyโs journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due”. She has since reiterated that the film will cover “another big milestone for Belly,” continuing her personal journey.
What We Know About the Movie’s Story
While specific plot details are being kept secret, the movie will continue from where the third season ended. The series concluded with Belly (Lola Tung) and Conrad (Christopher Briney) reconciling in Paris after seasons of romantic tension. The third book in Han’s series, which the show is based on, ends with an epilogue showing Belly and Conrad’s wedding at Cousins Beach.
It is expected the movie will explore the “next step” in their relationship as a couple. Han has confirmed she will direct the film, making it her feature film directing debut, and co-wrote the script with Sarah Kucserka.
The Cast and Their Reactions to the Movie News
The main cast from the series is expected to return, though official casting has not been announced. The core trio includes Lola Tung as Isabel “Belly” Conklin, Christopher Briney as Conrad Fisher, and Gavin Casalegno as Jeremiah Fisher.
In a joint interview in September 2025, the actors shared they did not yet know details about the movie project. “Iโm sure Jenny has a greatโshe apparently has a first draft,” Lola Tung told Deadline. “So hopefully, maybe soon weโll find out”. Christopher Briney joked about his own potential involvement in the story, saying, “Thank god Iโm not in the writerโs room, because I would write in some dumb s–t”.
Global Success of The Summer I Turned Pretty Series
The decision to make a movie follows the massive global success of the Prime Video series. Season 3 reached 70 million viewers worldwide in its first 70 days, making it the No. 1 title globally on the platform during its launch window. The season also saw viewership grow by 65% compared to Season 2.
The show has generated over 915 million social media engagements, which is the highest for any Prime Video series. All three seasons of the show are available to stream exclusively on Prime Video.

When Can Fans Expect the Movie?
As of now, there is no official release date for The Summer I Turned Pretty movie. During her September 2025 appearance on TODAY, Han said it was “still a little too soon to say” when the film would come out. She has confirmed it will not be released in 2026.
Given that the script is complete but filming has not begun, the production process is still in its early stages. Industry timelines suggest a project of this scale typically takes considerable time to move from a finished script through pre-production, filming, and post-production before reaching audiences.
