“The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call,” the popular medical drama starring Ju Ji Hoon and Choo Young Woo, will return for a third season. Writer Lee Nak Jun confirmed the news, expressing his delight at the show’s success and the strong chemistry between the lead actors.
The writer shared his journey from novel to webtoon to drama on the YouTube channel Doctor Friends. He recalled the initial challenges of bringing his vision to life, stating, “Netflix? At first, I thought it was just a dream. When I first hoped that my novel could become a webtoon and eventually a drama back in 2019, it seemed impossible. But then, the rights were sold. After a long period with no filming, suddenly, production started in 2023.” Lee Nak Jun also mentioned that Seasons 2 and 3 were planned from the beginning. He encouraged viewers to explore his webtoon or web novel for those curious about what happens next, since Season 1 has not yet wrapped up its storyline.
The Trauma Code’s Global Impact
“The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call” follows the story of Baek Kang Hyuk (Joo Ji Hoon), a gifted surgeon who takes charge of a struggling trauma team, and Yang Jae Won (Choo Young Woo), his first fellow. The show has resonated with audiences worldwide, earning praise for its intense medical scenes and the dynamic between the two leads. One scene, in particular, where Baek Kang Hyuk carries Yang Jae Won down from a helicopter, drew much attention. Lee Nak Jun shared, “The director was really concerned. Is there any doctor in Korea who can rappel down a helicopter? No. But this is a medical fantasy novel, so we had to make it work. When we consulted with medical experts, they said, ‘There’s too much fantasy.’ It was difficult to get advice. But Baek Kang Hyuk is a person with superhuman abilities. He can do anything, even knowing the diagnosis before the test results come back. His physical abilities are also extraordinary. Baek Kang Hyuk is 188cm tall, and Ju Ji Hoon, who plays him, is also 188cm. It feels like fate,” Lee proudly remarked.
The show’s global popularity is evident in its impressive viewership numbers. Just three days after its release, “The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call” ranked third in the global (non-English) TV shows category on Netflix’s Tudum website, amassing 4.7 million viewing hours between January 20 and 26. It also topped South Korea’s TOP 10 Series list and charted in 26 countries across Asia, Europe, and South America.
