Tom Cruise surprised fans by appearing on the roof of London’s BFI IMAX theater in a bold promotional stunt for his upcoming film Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The actor, known for performing his own dangerous stunts, wore a black suit as he stood atop the iconic cinema building on May 11, 2025. The event happened just before he received the prestigious BFI Fellowship award.

The BFI IMAX, home to the UK’s largest cinema screen, was displaying a massive banner for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Footage of Cruise on the roof quickly went viral on social media, with fans amazed at his fearless approach to promotion. The stunt aligns with the high-energy action the Mission: Impossible series is famous for.

Cruise was in London for a career discussion at the BFI and to attend a screening of Mission: Impossible – Fallout. During the event, he shared stories about working with director Christopher McQuarrie, who helped shape the franchise’s most memorable moments.

“I was a kid that opened a window and I’d crawl on the roof and look at the stars. I’d wake up and I’d sneak out and I was three years old,” Cruise said, explaining his lifelong love for climbing. “The neighbours called and said ‘I think there’s a child.’ Or, I’d climb a tree. Just, everything was an adventure to me. It still is.”

The actor’s latest stunt comes ahead of the world premiere of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14. The film will screen out of competition, with Cruise and McQuarrie walking the red carpet alongside co-stars Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, and Ving Rhames.

This marks Cruise’s third appearance at Cannes. He first attended in 1992 for Far and Away and returned in 2022 for Top Gun: Maverick, where he received an honorary Palme d’Or. The festival will run from May 13 to May 24, with Juliette Binoche leading this year’s jury.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is the eighth and possibly final installment in the long-running franchise. The plot follows Ethan Hunt as he battles a dangerous AI called The Entity. To defeat it, he must retrieve source code from a sunken Russian submarine with the help of his IMF team.

The film’s trailer, released in April 2025, shows Cruise performing jaw-dropping stunts, including hanging from an airplane and diving off an aircraft carrier. New cast members like Hannah Waddingham and Nick Offerman also make their debut in the action-packed sequel.

Produced by Paramount Pictures and Skydance, the movie has a reported budget of $400 million, making it one of the most expensive films ever made. It will hit theaters in France on May 21 and in the U.S. on May 23.

Cruise’s dedication to practical stunts has been a hallmark of the Mission: Impossible series. Last year, he jumped off the Stade de France during the Paris Olympics handover ceremony. His commitment to realism keeps fans excited for each new installment.

The BFI Fellowship is one of the highest honors in British cinema, previously awarded to legends like Steven Spielberg, Cate Blanchett, and Alfred Hitchcock. Cruise received the award on May 12 at a dinner hosted by BFI Chair Jay Hunt.

Social media erupted with reactions to Cruise’s rooftop appearance. One fan wrote, “Only Tom Cruise would promote a movie by standing on top of a giant cinema. Legend!” Another added, “This man never stops amazing us. Can’t wait for the new Mission: Impossible!”

With the Cannes premiere just days away, anticipation for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is at an all-time high. The film promises to deliver the same high-octane action and suspense that has defined the franchise for nearly 30 years.
