Fans of the hit CBS show Tracker will notice a different team dynamic when the third season begins. Two key characters from earlier seasons, Bobby Exley and Velma Bruin, have exited the show. Their departures are explained in the storyline, paving the way for new faces and shifting relationships for Colter Shaw.
The show’s producer, Elwood Reid, confirmed the changes, stating that the characters’ absences “both get explained”. He assured fans that this does not mean the characters can never return, but the creative team wanted to “consolidate and build out Reenie’s office a bit more”.
Where Bobby and Velma Went
The show addresses the whereabouts of both characters in the new season. Velma Bruin, Colter’s former case handler, has decided to step back from her work to focus on her personal life. Reid explained, “With Velmaโs character, sheโs going off to be with Teddi,” referencing her estranged wife.
For Bobby Exley, Colter’s tech support expert, the exit is framed as a career move. According to the showrunner, Bobby “seized on a good opportunity”. His departure is seen as a natural progression for the character, allowing him to pursue new ventures off-screen.
These character exits are part of the show’s evolution. Reid has previously talked about not wanting the show to be “phone-a-friend every week,” pushing for Colter to solve cases more independently. The loss of his regular handler and tech guru forces Colter Shaw to rely more heavily on his own instincts and ingenuity.
New and Expanding Roles in Season 3
With Bobby and Velma gone, other characters are stepping up to fill the void. The most prominent is Randy, played by Chris Lee. Introduced in Season 2 as Bobby’s cousin, Randy quickly became a fan favorite with his energetic and warm personality.
Randy’s role is expanding significantly in the new season. He will be working out of Reenie Greene’s office, both assisting her with her law practice security and helping Colter with cases. Reid noted that the dynamic between Randy and Reenie has been beneficial for the show, saying, “Having Chris Lee in the same space that Fiona Rene is in just gets you [more]. The stuff weโve seen so far is so much fun.”
Another character getting more screen time is Keaton, the retired ex-cop played by Brent Sexton. Keaton, who assisted Colter on a case in a previous season, is expected to appear at Reenie’s office later in the season. His grittier, more morally complex approach to obtaining information provides a interesting contrast to Colter’s methods.
A Deeper Look into the Shaw Family Mystery
Season 3 continues to explore the central mystery surrounding the death of Colter’s father, Ashton Shaw. The Season 2 finale ended with a shocking confession from a man named Otto, who claimed he pushed Colter’s father off a cliffโand that Colter’s mother, Mary Dove Shaw, had asked for his help.
The new season will unpack this complicated history. Executive producer Elwood Reid shared, “Colterโs the one guy that stayed with his motherโฆ Heโs the one guy that kind of lived in that lie, that bubble, a little bit longer. So I think thatโs going to come with a big pot of emotion when he does really finally confront his mother about all this.”
The premiere episode, titled “The Process,” will see Colter “grapple with the shocking truth about his father’s death”. He will team up with his brother, Russell Shaw, played by Jensen Ackles, who is returning for the first two episodes of the season. The brothers will work together to find a missing wife and daughter for one of Reenie’s clients.
Fan Reactions to the Changes
The news of the cast changes has generated mixed feelings among the show’s followers. On social media, some fans expressed disappointment about the departures. One fan commented, “I am going to miss Bobby a lot!!!!!” while another stated, “I think Velma was an important part of the equation. It feels wrong.”
However, many viewers are excited about the expanded role for Randy. One fan shared, “I liked Randy better. I thought he had more personality than they gave to Bobby.” The dynamic between the characters was a point of discussion, with another fan noting, “Randy and Reenie are two high energy characters,” wondering how the balance will work without the stabilizing presence of Velma.
Tracker Season 3 is scheduled to premiere on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at 8/7c on CBS.
