What to Expect in “Never Been CRISPR’d”

This episode centers on the return of Hobie McSorley, played by guest star Nat Faxon. Hobie, described in a CBS press release as “the man with the glowing chest,” is an experimental geneticist and an old friend of Watson’s. His last visit to the clinic involved a different kind of risky science, and his return suggests another bizarre medical puzzle.

The crisis begins when Hobie and his new girlfriend try a DIY gene-editing experiment using CRISPR technology. CRISPR is a real-world tool that allows scientists to edit DNA, and its misuse in a non-professional setting provides the episode’s central danger. When the experiment fails, Hobie has no choice but to bring his girlfriend to the one doctor he trusts: John Watson.

While dealing with this urgent case, a parallel story develops that will interest fans of the show’s larger mythology. Watson begins to feel that Sherlock Holmes (Robert Carlyle) is keeping secrets from him. Sherlock’s return from the dead earlier this season has already complicated Watson’s life, and this new distrust could drive a wedge between the famous partners. The official synopsis does not specify what Watson suspects, but it marks a shift in their recently renewed partnership.

The episode is directed by Anton Cropper and written by Adam Samuel Goldman and Heather Ross.

A Look Back at Episode 9 and the Season 2 Story

Episode 10 follows a dramatic installment that dealt with modern technology and personal recovery. In Season 2, Episode 9, “Shannon Says Bex Loves Micah,” the clinic treated a young man named Micah who was dangerously addicted to an AI chatbot named Shannon. The chatbot gave him life advice, which he followed without question, leading to his hospitalization.

The episode also involved a gymnast named Bex, who suffered a deep head injury. Watson’s detective skills were crucial when he learned from Bex’s father about the death of her twin sister, which helped him correctly diagnose and save her life. By the end, both Micah and Bex were on a path to recovery, with a strong message about mental health.

Season 2 has seen major changes for the team at the Holmes Clinic. The year started with a personal case involving Mary Morstan’s (Rochelle Aytes) mother, who was poisoned while suffering from a severe form of dementia. The biggest shock, however, was the return of Sherlock Holmes, who was presumed dead after his fight with Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls. His reappearance has forced Watson to confront his past while trying to maintain his new life and clinic in Pittsburgh.
