Neil Patrick Harris is looking back at his time on How I Met Your Mother and sharing a surprising reason why the beloved sitcom became such a massive success. The actor, who played the legendary Barney Stinson for nine seasons, revealed that the cast and crew never felt safe in their jobs. That constant worry about getting canceled actually pushed everyone to work harder and stay sharp.

Harris opened up about this during a new two-part episode of the How We Made Your Mother podcast, which is hosted by his former co-star Josh Radnor and series co-creator Craig Thomas. The podcast, produced in partnership with Audacy and The Office Ladies Network, gives fans an inside look at the making of the show that ran from 2005 to 2014 on CBS.

The Hunger That Kept Everyone Sharp

Harris did not hold back when describing the mindset of the cast during those early years. He admitted that none of them thought the show would last.

“We never felt secure,” Harris said on the podcast. “We thought we might get canceled all the time. That hunger kept everyone sharp โ€” writers, actors, everyone. We weren’t coasting.”

The actor explained that this insecurity was actually a good thing. Instead of getting comfortable and relaxing, the entire team stayed motivated to prove themselves with every single episode. They could not afford to deliver anything less than their best because they genuinely believed each season might be their last.

This feeling was not new for Harris. In a previous interview with People magazine in 2025, he recalled how uncertain things were during the first four seasons.

“For the first really four seasons of that show, we did not think there would be another season, so every time we finished, we thought we were done,” Harris stated at the time. “And then, it was a nice surprise when we were coming back.”

Neil Patrick Harris Felt Insecure Playing Barney Stinson

Despite playing the confident, womanizing, suit-wearing Barney Stinson who always had a trick up his sleeve, Harris revealed that he personally felt the opposite of confident while filming.

“I was needy and insecure as an actor back then,” Harris admitted. “I never finished a scene thinking, ‘Mic drop, nailed it.’ I was always asking, ‘You think that’s good? Pam, are you happy? Do you want to do it again?’ That insecurity absolutely played into the bravado.”

Pamela Fryman, who directed many episodes of the series, was often on the receiving end of those questions. Harris now believes that his real-life nervousness helped him shape Barney into the character fans loved.

He also shared a deeper take on Barney, suggesting that the character’s over-the-top confidence was just a mask.

“I’ve always felt Barney was kind of broken. He wore armor. The suit was armor,” Harris explained. “He hid sincerity and vulnerability behind bravado because that’s how he survived.”

This understanding of Barney as a sensitive person underneath all the flashy suits and pickup lines gave Harris a connection to the role. It also made Barney more than just a funny side character. Viewers saw glimpses of his vulnerable side throughout the series, especially in episodes focusing on his father and his relationship with Robin.

How I Met Your Mother Almost Got Canceled Multiple Times

The fear of cancellation was real. How I Met Your Mother premiered in 2005, just one year after Friends ended. While it quickly gained a loyal following, it was never an instant ratings monster.

The show faced tough competition. Harris even mentioned back in 2008 that they were up against popular reality shows. The network pushed for big guest stars to boost viewership, which led to appearances from people like Britney Spears, Mandy Moore, Enrique Iglesias, and Heidi Klum.

Spears appeared in a 2008 episode as Abby, a receptionist crushing on Barney. Her cameo brought in 10.6 million viewers, making it the most-watched episode of the series at that time among the 18-to-49 age group. Co-creator Carter Bays later admitted that Spears’ appearance was a turning point. He told Metro.co.uk in 2022 that the show was “doing okay” before that episode, but Spears “brought a ton of new eyes” to the series.

However, Harris was initially against this kind of stunt casting. In a 2008 interview with The Associated Press, he expressed concern.

“I’m in the minority that our show does not need stunt casting in order to succeed,” Harris said at the time. “I worry that if they start ‘Will and Grace-ing’ us too much, that the show will suffer. And we’re all really proud of the content of the show.”

Looking back, the guest stars did help keep the show afloat during those uncertain early seasons, allowing it to run for nine years and produce 208 episodes.

The Secret Finale Filmed Years in Advance

Because the showrunners were always worried about cancellation, they had to be prepared. Co-creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas knew from the very beginning how they wanted the series to end. The problem was that the ending involved Ted’s kids, played by David Henrie and Lyndsy Fonseca.

Back in 2006, during season two, Bays and Thomas realized they could not wait. The child actors were growing up fast. If the show lasted several more years, Henrie and Fonseca would look completely different. They would not fit in the clothes or look like the same kids sitting on that couch listening to Ted’s long story.

So the creators brought the young actors in secretly. They closed the set, kept only one camera operator, and filmed the final scene that would air eight years later in 2014. Henrie and Fonseca signed non-disclosure agreements and were sworn to secrecy. Fonseca reportedly pushed the scene out of her mind so she would not accidentally reveal anything.

Bays confirmed that they always had contingency plans. If the show had been canceled early, they would have revealed that Victoria was the mother. That plan was ready to go just in case.

Fortunately, the show survived long enough to tell the full story they had planned, even if the controversial finaleโ€”which revealed the mother had died and Ted ended up with Robinโ€”divided fans.

Where Is the Cast Now

Since How I Met Your Mother ended in 2014, the cast has stayed busy. Josh Radnor has appeared in shows like Rise and Hunters and continues to work in theater and music. Cobie Smulders became a key part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Maria Hill in The Avengers movies and starred in shows like Stumptown. Alyson Hannigan returned to TV in Penn and Teller: Fool Us and Kim Possible. Jason Segel has focused on movie roles and the Apple TV+ series Shrinking.

As for Neil Patrick Harris, he remains very active in Hollywood. His latest film, Sunny Dancer, screened at the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2026. He also has an action-thriller called The Last Temptation of Becky coming out. The film, directed by Jenn Wexler, is part of a trilogy and stars Lulu Wilson, Brandon Flynn, James Urbaniak, and Kate Siegel. It is expected to release in summer 2026 through Quiver Distribution.
