What to Expect in “Up in Smoke”
The second episode picks up directly from the intense cliffhanger of the premiere. The season’s first episode, “Up in the Air,” ended with the community spotting smoke from a wildfire in the newly opened Goldie National Park. This happened just after Allie Grant and her friend Cooper went into the park for a hike. Nathan Grant and Joseph Canfield were last seen mounting their horses to race toward the danger to find the children.
“Up in Smoke” will split its focus between two critical efforts. Nathan will be at the forefront of the action, dealing with the spreading fire and the urgent search for Allie and Cooper. Meanwhile, back in Hope Valley, Elizabeth Thornton will lead the town’s relief efforts, organizing support and maintaining calm while her loved ones are in peril.
The show’s stars have spoken about the high stakes of this storyline. Erin Krakow, who plays Elizabeth, said the situation is “life or death”.
“The stakes are very high. Itโs life or death, and knowing that there are kids in those woodsโฆ She has to stay with Little Jack, obviously, and make sure that heโs OK, but sheโs quick to tell Nathan that Allieโs out there, and they ride out as quickly as they can to try to save the day,” Krakow told TV Insider.
Kevin McGarry, who portrays Nathan, explained his character’s immediate priority:
“As much as, of course, his duty is to go protect the town to make sure it doesnโt get decimated by the fire, ultimately, I think at that moment, itโs my daughter out there,” McGarry said.
The episode promises to test the strength and unity of Hope Valley as the entire community rallies in response to the crisis.
Fan Reactions to the Premiere Cliffhanger
The dramatic ending of the season premiere immediately sparked reactions from fans, known as “Hearties,” across social media. Many expressed their shock and anxiety about having to wait a week for resolution.
One fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Oh no! A fire!! What a way to end the first episode of the season!!!”. Another commented on Facebook, “Oh no hope the children are okay, going to be long week to wait to see what happens, canโt wait”.
Others appreciated the episode’s overall return to form. One Facebook user stated, “The show tonight was the best it has been in a few seasons! The writers have stepped it up in content and storyline, all the actors were on their game. It was exciting to watch and now Iโm anxious for next weekโs episode”.
