The latest episodes (9-12) of the drama When Life Gives You Tangerines, which came out on March 21, 2025, show a new part of the story. The focus shifts to the daughter of Ae Sun (played by IU) and Yang Gwan Sik (played by Park Bo Gum), named Geum Myeong. These episodes highlight the difficult times she goes through in her love life, showing how life can take unexpected turns even when things seem hopeful.

Geum Myeong’s Return and Budding Connection

The story reveals that Geum Myeong (again played by IU) has been living in Japan for an exchange program. Episode 9 shows her finishing this program and returning to her hometown, Seoul, in episode 10. Back in Seoul, she starts working part-time as a ticket seller at a theater. It’s here that she meets Park Cheong Seob (played by Kim Seon Ho), an artist who creates movie posters. Their relationship starts to grow as the story continues.

A Mother’s Worry and an Unexpected Rescue

Episodes 9 and 10 also show the worry and sadness of Ae Sun as she travels to Seoul. She has been constantly calling her daughter, Geum Myeong, but her worry doesn’t go away. Finally, she decides to visit her. Ae Sun finds her daughter unconscious in her apartment due to carbon monoxide poisoning from bad electrical wiring. In a panic, Ae Sun breaks down the door and runs to the landlord’s house to call for help. By chance, Park Cheong Seob is also at the landlord’s house, asking for permission to marry the landlord’s daughter. Seeing the emergency, he immediately carries Geum Myeong to the ambulance, ultimately saving her life.

Throughout these episodes, Park Cheong Seob’s strong feelings for Geum Myeong become clearer. His care for her is also shown by his mother, who likes Geum Myeong and often gives her books to help her study for college exams.

In 1994, before he joined the military, Park Cheong Seob had one last meeting with Geum Myeong. Even though he had feelings for her, he didn’t tell her, knowing that she liked someone else named Yeong Bum. These episodes also explore the difficult relationship between Eun Myeong and Hyeon Seok. Due to problems in their families, Eun Myeong faces violence and physical harm from Hyeon Seok’s brother. Because of this pressure, Eun Myeong decides to end their relationship to protect Hyeon Seok. Despite these difficulties, Hyeon Seok remains in love and is willing to face any hardship to be with Eun Myeong.

Facing Harsh Realities in Love

Episodes 11 and 12 of When Life Gives You Tangerines show the tough times Geum Myeong experiences in her love life. She has been in a relationship with Yeong Bum (played by Lee Jun Young) since their first year of college, but they haven’t gotten married because Yeong Bum’s mother strongly opposes it. These episodes look at Geum Myeong’s emotional struggles as she deals with the complexities of love, family, and her own desires.

Episode 11 focuses on the increasing tension between Geum Myeong and Yeong Bum’s family. When their parents meet to talk about the wedding, Ae Sun sees how Yeong Bum’s mother treats Geum Myeong badly. The situation gets worse when Yeong Bum’s mother later confronts Ae Sun and Geum Myeong at a wedding dress shop, saying coldly that she wants to stop the wedding.

Feeling deeply hurt, Ae Sun can’t understand why Yeong Bum’s mother dislikes her daughter so much. However, by the end of the episode, Geum Myeong speaks up for herself. She refuses to accept any more disrespect and defends her and her family’s honor. In a brave decision, she calls off the engagement and leaves Yeong Bum.

For the next year, Yeong Bum tries many times to get Geum Myeong back, but she stays firm in her decision. Each time, she reminds him of how his family has looked down on her and her family because of their financial situation. Despite their long history and affection for each other, the weight of his family’s prejudice becomes too much, leading to their painful and final breakup after seven years of being together.

Geum Myeong returns to Seoul from her hometown, Jeju Island. Her mother, Ae Sun, is relieved to have her daughter back. Ae Sun encourages Geum Myeong to think about marriage again, this time with someone better, like Park Yeong Bum.

In Episode 12, Park Cheong Seob finishes his military service. By chance, he runs into Geum Myeong at a bus stop. When he sees her, he starts to walk towards her, but before he can reach her, Geum Myeong gets on the bus and leaves. Not wanting to miss this chance, Park Cheong Seob runs after the bus, as if it’s his last opportunity to reconnect with her. This emotional chase is how Episode 12 of When Life Gives You Tangerines ends.
