The magical journey for the Russo family is coming to a close. Disney officially announced that Wizards Beyond Waverly Place will end after its upcoming third season. The show will return for a special four-episode final event scheduled to air this summer on Disney+ and Disney Channel.
The news arrives with an exciting twist for fans of the original series. Selena Gomez is stepping behind the camera for the first time. She will make her directorial debut with the premiere episode of Season 3. Gomez will also reprise her role as Alex Russo in multiple episodes throughout the final season.
What Happened in the Season 2 Cliffhanger
The second season ended with a major shock for viewers. The finale revealed that Alex is actually the biological mother of Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown), the young wizard sent to live with Justin Russo. The episode showed Alex jumping into a dark magic portal to save Billie from the evil Lord Morsus, Billie’s grandfather. The portal closed behind her, leaving everyone wondering if Alex was gone for good.
David Henrie, who plays Justin Russo, previously addressed fan concerns about Alex’s fate. He wrote on social media:
“Just so you know, Alex Russo is tougher than you think – and there’s a lot more to come. You’re asking all the right questions. Stay tuned, #WizardsBeyond has got some magical surprises up our sleeves.”
Season 3 Story Details
The official logline for the final season reveals where the story goes next. Billie is still dealing with the loss of Alex after the Season 2 ending. She discovers that finding her long-lost father is the only way to rescue her mother. As the Russo family works together to find Alex, Billie learns that their combined magic is the only thing that can defeat the evil threatening them.
Production for the four-episode finale begins the week of April 6 in Los Angeles. Disney has not yet announced a specific premiere date, but the final season will air during summer 2026.
Cast and Crew Returning for the Final Season
The main cast returns for the show’s final chapter. David Henrie leads the series as Justin Russo. Janice LeAnn Brown plays Billie. Alkaio Thiele and Max Matenko return as Justin’s sons Roman and Milo. Mimi Gianopulos plays Giada Russo, and Taylor Cora plays Winter.
The creative team includes writers and executive producers Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas. Gary Marsh, Jonas Agin, Rick Williams, Gomez, and Henrie also serve as executive producers.
The Revival’s Success by the Numbers
The Wizards of Waverly Place revival has performed well for Disney since its debut in 2024. The show has collected over 101 million views on Disney Channel’s official YouTube account. The original series aired on Disney Channel from 2007 to 2012 and helped launch Selena Gomez into stardom.
The original show followed the Russo siblings as they handled teenage life while learning magic and keeping their powers secret from the public. The series ended in 2012 with Alex winning the family wizard competition. Wizards Beyond Waverly Place continued the story by focusing on a grown-up Justin, who was living as a mortal with his family until Billie arrived.

Gomez’s Return to the Franchise
For Gomez, returning to direct the show that made her famous carries deep meaning. Since the original Wizards of Waverly Place ended, she has built a major career in both acting and music. She earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role in the film Emilia Pérez. She also stars in and executive produces the Hulu comedy Only Murders in the Building alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short.
Gomez has appeared in only four episodes across the first two seasons of the revival. Her expanded role in Season 3, both as a director and as a recurring on-screen presence, marks her biggest commitment to the franchise since the original series ended.
The four-episode final season gives the Russo family story a proper ending. The show will stream on Disney+ and air on Disney Channel for viewers in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and other regions where Disney+ is available.
