The new trailer for Marvel’s upcoming Wonder Man series presents a clear message: the show is aware people might be tired of superhero stories and plans to use that idea as part of its story. The show, which has its full season of eight episodes releasing on Disney+ on January 27, 2026, focuses on an actor named Simon Williams who just wants to land a movie role. A key poster for the series even shows a fake magazine cover that reads, “Hollywood Experiencing Superhero Fatigue”.
The Core Story: An Actorโs Dream Meets Superhero Reality
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II stars as Simon Williams, an actor finding it hard to get good roles. His life changes after a meeting with Trevor Slattery, played by Ben Kingsley. Slattery tells Simon that a famous and reclusive director named Von Kovak is making a new movie called “Wonder Man”. Both actors desperately want a part in this film.
However, Simonโs life gets more complicated when he starts to develop real superpowers. The trailer suggests he is incredibly strong, though he may not have full control over his new abilities. Instead of wanting to be a hero, Simon mainly wants to use this situation to help his acting career.
“The show is self-aware without looking into the camera,” Yahya Abdul-Mateen II said in an interview. “There’ll be commentary about superhero fatigueโฆ but to me, it’s just dressing. The focus of the show is about an actor’s journey. It’s about a journey of friendship”.
A Complicated Friendship and a Government Threat
The relationship between Simon and Trevor is central to the show. The trailer shows them forming an awkward friendship, with both men at very different points in their careers but sharing the same goal. This friendship is tested when the trailer reveals a twist: Trevor Slattery is secretly reporting information about Simon to the Department of Damage Control (DODC).
Agent P. Cleary, a DODC agent fans have seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Ms. Marvel, is managing Slattery. The story implies Trevor is being forced to cooperate with the government agency, possibly to secure his freedom after past events. This puts Simon, who is seen as a potential threat by the DODC, in danger.
Inside the Hollywood Satire of the MCU
The series aims to show the inside view of Hollywood within the Marvel universe. Simon Williams hides his powers because, in the world of the show, having superpowers is looked down upon in the entertainment industry. The story follows his attempt to win a role in a big superhero movie remake while actually having powers, creating a satirical look at the business.
The series is under the “Marvel Spotlight” banner, which Marvel uses for stories that are more character-focused and can stand on their own without needing to know every past film. Showrunner Andrew Guest and co-creator Destin Daniel Cretton are leading the project.
