Classical Music in the Film
Beyond the original score, Guillermo del Toro selected several classical pieces to enhance the film’s 19th-century atmosphere. These songs help ground the gothic drama in its time period .
- “Rondeau (Abdelazer)” by Henry Purcell, arranged and performed by Jonathan Scott.
- “The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I: Prelude and Fugue No. 17 in A-flat Major” by Johann Sebastian Bach, performed by Konstantin Lifschitz.
- “String Quartet No. 4 in C Major: Allegro” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, performed by the Mozart String Quartet.
The Music Behind the Story
Alexandre Desplat’s score is described as elegant, emotional, and deeply gothic, perfectly matching the tone of del Toro’s vision. The music introduces a haunting seven-note motif for Victor Frankenstein accompanied by ghostly female choirs and a low electronic pulse, representing the story’s themes of life and death.
The score treats the birth of the Creature not with horror, but with a sense of wonder and tenderness. A four-note motif represents the Creature itself, often played tenderly on plucked strings and piano. The solo violin work by Eldbjรธrg Hemsing provides a beautiful and melancholy voice throughout the film, reflecting both the beauty of nature and the tragedy of the story . One of the standout tracks is the seven-minute cue “The Tower,” which scores the dramatic creation scene with a thunderous organ, chanting vocals, and a frenetic, full-orchestra sound .
The film’s editor, Evan Schiff, explained the challenge of the film’s structure, noting, “With any movie that involves chapters and voice-over, keeping the momentum of the story up is really one of the greatest challenges that we have to keep an eye on” .
The soundtrack for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is available to stream and download on all major music platforms. The film itself, starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Goth, is now streaming on Netflix .
