A doctor’s second chance at life comes with a dangerous mystery in The Crystal Cuckoo, a new psychological thriller coming to Netflix. The Spanish series, based on the bestselling novel by Javier Castillo, follows a young woman who discovers the heart transplant that saved her has connected her to a decades-old small-town tragedy. All six episodes of the series will be released at once for a gripping binge-watch.

The Story Behind the Mystery

The series centers on Clara Merlo, a first-year medical resident whose life is shattered by a sudden heart attack. After a life-saving transplant gives her a second chance, she is consumed by a need to know the identity of her donor. Her search leads her to a small, isolated village, where she learns her new heart once belonged to a young man linked to an unresolved tragedy that happened over twenty years ago.

Clara’s arrival in the town acts as a catalyst, unearthing a past that many wanted to keep buried. On the very day she arrives, a baby disappears from a local park, an event that chillingly echoes a disappearance from two decades prior. Clara finds herself in the middle of a community filled with secrets, forcing her to investigate a mystery that spans generations.

“When you receive someone else’s heart, you also inherit their secrets,” a line from the trailer hints, setting the tone for a story where the body may remember what the mind has forgotten.

Meet the Cast Bringing the Thriller to Life

The Crystal Cuckoo features a standout ensemble of Spanish acting talent, led by Catalina Sopelana as the protagonist, Clara Merlo. Sopelana is known for her roles in other Netflix projects like The Gardener and The Neighbor.

She is joined by Itziar Ituño, famous for her role as Raquel Murillo in Money Heist and its spinoff Berlin, who plays the donor’s mother, Marta Peña. Álex García from Holy Family plays Miguel Ferrer, and Iván Massagué from the acclaimed film The Platform takes on the role of Rafael.

The cast is rounded out by Tomás del Estal and Alfons Nieto, who have both appeared in popular Spanish series like Gangs of Galicia and Elite.

The Creative Team and Source Material

The series is an adaptation of the 2023 novel of the same name by Javier Castillo, whose previous book The Snow Girl was also a successful Netflix adaptation. Castillo’s novels have sold millions of copies worldwide, and his signature style blends intense psychological drama with gripping mysteries.

The adaptation is produced by Atípica Films, the same production company behind The Snow Girl and Unit 7. The scripts were written by Jesús Mesas and Javier Andrés Roig, who also worked on The Snow Girl. Directing duties are handled by Laura Alvea and Juan Miguel del Castillo.

Filming took place in the Spanish region of Extremadura and in Madrid, wrapping up in early March 2025.

Some sources also note a release date of November 16, 2025, for the United States, but Netflix has confirmed the November 14th date for its global launch.
