The upcoming Yellowstone spinoff series is dealing with a major change behind the scenes before the first episode even airs. Chad Feehan, the creator and showrunner of Dutton Ranch, will not return for a potential second season. The news arrives roughly three weeks before the show makes its debut on May 15, 2026.

Reports indicate that the decision came after the completion of the first season. Feehan reportedly clashed with the show’s leads, Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, who reprise their famous roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler. Sources close to the production told Puck News that the issues were not entirely about the quality of the writing but more about how Feehan managed the day-to-day operations on set. The report suggests that the actors, alongside franchise mastermind Taylor Sheridan and producer David Glasser, were unhappy with his handling of the production.

Behind The Scenes Disagreements Lead To Exit

Taylor Sheridan already has a large amount of control over his growing television empire. While Feehan was brought in to handle the duties of a traditional showrunner, reports claim that his style did not fit well with the existing cast and crew who have worked on the Yellowstone franchise for years.

According to industry sources, the disagreement led to Sheridan and Glasser stepping in to make a change. Although Feehan will not return for a second season, he did complete his work on the first season. The show is still set to release on schedule, and a new showrunner is expected to be promoted from within the current writing team if the show gets renewed.

This is not the first time the Yellowstone universe has seen drama off-screen. The main series faced a major shake-up when star Kevin Costner left the show before the final episodes aired due to scheduling conflicts and reported disputes with Sheridan. Similarly, other Sheridan shows like Tulsa King have also experienced changes in leadership behind the camera.

What To Expect From Dutton Ranch

Even with the change in leadership, the first season of Dutton Ranch is finished and ready for audiences. The story directly follows the events of the Yellowstone finale. Beth and Rip leave Montana to start a new life on a ranch in South Texas.

The official description for the series explains that the couple must deal with a tough rival ranch that will do anything to protect its land. The show promises the same kind of intense drama that made Yellowstone famous. The cast includes new faces such as Ed Harris, Annette Bening, and Jai Courtney, along with returning Yellowstone actor Finn Little.

The network remains confident in the show’s ability to perform well. Paramount is moving forward with a strong marketing push for the series.
