Netflixโ€™s new British drama Unchosen has viewers asking one big question after watching the season finale. The show follows a young mother trapped inside a strict Christian community who meets an outsider that seems like her way out. But that outsider, Sam, turns out to be far more dangerous than the life she wanted to leave behind. The final episode delivers a tense, rain-soaked showdown that decides everyone’s fate.

The six-episode series debuted on April 21, 2026 on Netflix worldwide. Creator Julie Gearey (known for Intergalactic and Prisoners’ Wives) wrote the show based on conversations with real people who escaped from religious cults. The cast includes Molly Windsor as Rosie, Asa Butterfield as her husband Adam, and Fra Fee as the mysterious Sam.

ROSIE’S FATE IN THE UNCHOSEN FINALE

Yes, Rosie survives the finale and escapes the cult with her daughter Grace. But the show makes her work for it until the very last minutes.

The final episode sees Rosie finally learning the full truth about Sam’s violent past. She finds out he is an escaped convict who murdered his girlfriend as a teenager and later killed her cousin. When her daughter Grace tells her that Sam threatened to hurt them both, Rosie decides she has no choice but to run.

Rosie tells Adam about her affair with Sam and says she wants to leave the Fellowship for good. She asks Adam to drive her and Grace to the train station. Adam agrees, partly out of guilt for how he treated her during their marriage.

The escape plan hits trouble when a storm brings down a tree that blocks the road. Sam pulls up behind them, having figured out what they are trying to do. Adam attacks Sam to give Rosie and Grace a chance to run, but Sam quickly overpowers him.

Sam chases Rosie through the woods. He catches her and forces her head underwater in a pool, trying to drown her. But something changes inside him. He has a moment of clarity and lets her come up for air. Rosie runs back to Grace, and the two escape together.

Showrunner Julie Gearey explained why Sam lets Rosie live instead of killing her.

โ€œThe Sam at the beginning of the show would have just drowned her, but he has been through this experience, and he does want to be a better version of himself. There is some light within him.โ€

Fra Fee, who plays Sam, shared his thoughts on that moment during filming.

โ€œSomething manages to get through the red mist. Whether it is recognition of his actions when he was 16 that caused his life to be taken away from him, whether it is a voice of God that exists in the fellowship, something manages to cut through the white noise of his mind and his anger.โ€

WHERE ROSIE AND GRACE GO AFTER ESCAPING

The finale shows Rosie and Grace finding shelter with Mrs. Phillips, the cult leader’s wife. Mrs. Phillips left the Fellowship earlier after discovering her husband had been hiding letters from their son Matthew, who had been cast out of the community for dating an outsider.

Rosie remembers where Matthew lives, and this becomes her escape route. Mrs. Phillips welcomes them into her home, giving Rosie and Grace a real chance at starting a new life. The show ends on a hopeful note for the mother-daughter pair, suggesting they have found safety away from the controlling religious group.

Molly Windsor, who plays Rosie, described that final moment.

โ€œI think there is a slightly scary moment where she feels safe, and then she wonders โ€˜What am I going to do?โ€™ Fitting into society can be difficult, and learning to trust people can be difficult.โ€

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE CULT AFTER ROSIE LEAVES

The final scene of Unchosen delivers a chilling twist. The show jumps forward one year after Rosie’s escape. Sam walks into the Fellowship’s church wearing the clothes of a leader and starts giving the sermon to the congregation.

He has become the new head of the cult.

The camera holds on Sam as he looks directly at the viewers with a smile that shows he has no intention of changing his ways. He simply found a new group of people to control.

Gearey explained that she did not want Sam to be a full psychopath because that would make the character less interesting.

โ€œIt is not interesting writing a full psychopath as a character, because if you have full psychopathy, you cannot change, you cannot grow.โ€

ADAM’S FATE IN THE SEASON FINALE

Adam’s fate remains unclear at the end of Unchosen. After Rosie escapes, Sam returns to find Adam holding a gun. Sam refuses to fight back. Instead, he shows Adam a secret video he recorded of their sexual encounter. He uses this to manipulate Adam, knowing Adam’s religious beliefs make him terrified of anyone finding out he is gay.

โ€œAll I had to do was manipulate you, Adam, because that is who you are.โ€

Sam leaves Adam broken and kneeling on the ground. The final scenes do not show Adam in the congregation a year later. Viewers do not know if he left the community or if Sam did something to him. The show leaves his story without a clear answer.

Unchosen is now streaming on Netflix in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and other regions.
