The new AMC+ series The Audacity keeps getting more chaotic for its main characters. In Episode 4, titled Vanitas, things look good for tech CEO Duncan Park at first. He just secured a big investment from billionaire Carl Bardolph. But that win quickly runs into problems. At the same time, therapist JoAnne Felder gets very bad news about her home. This episode shows how both characters face new kinds of trouble, even after they think they have won.
Duncan Celebrates His Big Win
The episode starts with Duncan leaving a voice message for JoAnne. He talks about learning to love himself and how his fist represents his own strength. He is very happy because he finally got Carl Bardolph to agree to invest in his company, Hypergnosis. When he gets to the office, he shares the good news with all his employees. The team cheers for him. He even slides down a pole from the first floor to join them. Everyone is excited about what this means for the company.
Duncan believes this deal will change everything for Hypergnosis. The investment from Bardolph is worth a reported 300 million dollars. After many problems and failures, Duncan thinks he has finally made it. But he does not know that keeping Bardolph happy will be harder than he thought. His celebration is short lived, because a new problem is waiting for him.

A Setback During Parents’ Day
Later in the episode, Duncan goes to parents’ day at the school his children attend. The school is called Las Altas High School. He spends most of his time there trying to talk to JoAnne, who is also there for her son Orson. Duncan keeps asking her for more information about her clients. JoAnne gets tired of this and tells him to find a new therapist. She wants him to leave her alone.
During their talk, JoAnne starts to share a story about one of her patients. She tries to keep the person’s name a secret. But Duncan is very smart and figures out she is talking about Ingrid Talbert. Ingrid works for a company called Smote under a man named Orlando Lee. Duncan immediately understands that this information could help him make money. He uses what JoAnne tells him to predict that Smote’s stock will go up or down. This is a big problem because JoAnne should never share details about her patients with anyone.

JoAnne Gets Devastating News
While Duncan is dealing with business problems, JoAnne faces a personal crisis. Her ex-husband Gary gets a phone call that changes everything. Their landlord, a man named Alvin, has died. JoAnne is shocked and sad to hear this news. Alvin was a kind person who charged them lower rent because he supported their work as therapists. Now the house will go to his daughter, Beth.
JoAnne becomes very worried that she and Gary will lose their home. She also fears losing the space where they see their clients. Without the house, their whole practice could be in danger. She tries to send a voicemail to Beth to explain the situation. But she messes up and sends a long, confusing message by accident. This makes things even more stressful for her. The bad news keeps coming, and she does not know how to fix it.

Carl Bardolph Fires JoAnne
Things get worse for JoAnne when Carl Bardolph shows up for his therapy session. Carl is not happy at all. He tells JoAnne that he is firing her as his therapist. The reason is that she missed their last appointment. JoAnne missed it because she had to take her son Orson to the hospital. But Carl does not seem to care about her reasons. He says he is ending their sessions because he is getting back into the tech world through his work with Hypergnosis.
This is a huge loss for JoAnne. Carl was not just a patient. He was also a valuable connection. Losing him as a client means losing money and status. It also shows how Duncan’s actions keep affecting her life. Even when she tries to stay away from him, his deals and choices create problems for her. Now she has no therapist for Carl and a possible housing crisis at the same time.

The Tech Fight Club
Back in Duncan’s story, he faces a big problem with Carl Bardolph. After Duncan shares his prediction about Orlando Lee, Carl gets very angry. The reason is that Carl used to be Orlando’s mentor. He does not like hearing bad things about someone he trained. Carl walks away from Duncan in a huff. Duncan has to find him and fix things.
He tracks Carl down to a strange place. It is a kind of fight club for people in the technology world. Tech leaders go there to beat each other up using computer equipment. Carl and Orlando are both there. Carl challenges Duncan to fight Orlando. He questions whether Duncan is brave enough or strong enough to do it. At first, Orlando hits Duncan around easily. But Duncan does not give up. He eventually gets the upper hand and wins the fight. He chokes Orlando until Orlando says the safe word, which is ctrl+alt+del. After this, Carl seems to trust Duncan again.

JoAnne May Lose Everything
Near the end of the episode, Beth comes to visit JoAnne and Gary at their house. She brings a man named Irwin with her. JoAnne thinks Irwin might be Beth’s brother or partner. But she learns the truth, and it is even worse. Irwin is a real estate agent. Beth wants to sell the property. She gives JoAnne and Gary the first chance to buy it. But the price is very high. Beth wants more than 8 million dollars for the house.
JoAnne is shocked by this news. She does not have that kind of money. Her therapy practice does not earn enough to buy a house that expensive. The only way she could get that much cash is by doing something risky. She might have to use inside information from her patients to make money in the stock market. Or she might have to ask Duncan for help. Both choices are dangerous.
