What Small Prophets Is About
Small Prophets follows Michael Sleep, played by Pearce Quigley, a man whose life has been on hold since his girlfriend Clea disappeared seven years ago. Michael works at a DIY store, visits his elderly father Brian, played by Sir Michael Palin, and quietly hopes Clea will return.
One day Brian shares an old family recipe that involves rainwater, horse manure, and a bit of alchemy. The recipe is meant to create homunculi, tiny magical spirits that can predict the future. Michael, though skeptical, decides to try it. He wants to ask the homunculi one question: “Will I ever see Clea again?”
Michael gets help from his young coworker Kacey, played by Lauren Patel. Their friendship grows partly through their shared dislike of store manager Gordon, played by Mackenzie Crook. The strange activity in Michael’s garden shed draws the attention of his nosy neighbors, played by Sophie Willan and Jon Pointing. Clea’s brother Roy, played by Paul Kaye, is also trying to claim the house so he can sell it and pay off his debts.
The series blends live-action storytelling with stop-motion animation elements, adding a visual layer to its mix of the magical and the ordinary.
