The first official trailer for David Leitch‘s upcoming action thriller “How to Rob a Bank” is finally out. The movie follows a group of bank robbers who turn their crimes into viral social media content. Nicholas Hoult leads the crew as a masked thief who livestreams every heist while building a massive online following.
The trailer gives viewers a look at the chaotic and fast-paced world where crime meets content creation. Hoult’s character puts on a horse mask and tells his audience that an audience is more powerful than money. He explains that while owning a house or earning a six-figure salary is nearly impossible for most people, robbing a bank has a surprisingly high success rate.
The movie comes from David Leitch, the director known for “John Wick,” “Deadpool 2,” “Bullet Train,” and “The Fall Guy.” Leitch started his career as a stuntman and has built a name for himself by making some of the most action-packed movies in Hollywood.
Social Media Fame Becomes a Problem for the Robbing Crew
The “How to Rob a Bank” trailer shows that the thieves have livestreamed 15 separate bank robberies and gained over 900 million viewers. They wear different animal masks during their heists so no one knows their real faces. But their growing online fame ends up working against them.
A veteran FBI agent West, played by John C. Reilly, gets assigned to catch the crew. The FBI looks incompetent because they still have not caught the robbers despite the crimes being broadcast live. Agent West then reaches out to Reagan Gardner, a hacker and software engineer played by Zoë Kravitz, who is under house arrest.
“Despite the unlikely duo closing in, the crime ring pushes past their limits, putting everything on the line for their beliefs – and their most ambitious heist yet.” – Official synopsis for How to Rob a Bank
Reagan created a tracking technology when she caught her ex-boyfriend cheating. Agent West offers to drop all charges against her if she helps the FBI find the robbers. She agrees, and the unlikely pair starts working together to hunt down Hoult’s crew.
The Robbers Have a Bigger Purpose Than Just Money
The trailer reveals that Hoult’s character has a personal reason for robbing banks. When Agent West gets close to catching him, the robber holds the agent at gunpoint. West says the robber is not a murderer. Hoult’s character responds by saying, “No I’m not. Banks are. And when they kill someone you love, they don’t get a bullet. They get a bonus.”
This line suggests the crew sees themselves as modern-day Robin Hood figures fighting against a broken system. The trailer also shows Christian Slater playing a banker. Hoult later tells Slater’s character, “Your bank killed my son,” confirming that revenge plays a big part in the story.
The crew’s next target is a bank that has personal meaning to them. Agent West and Reagan figure this out and try to stop them before they pull off their biggest heist yet.

The Movie Blends Social Media Style with Traditional Filmmaking
The trailer shows that Leitch is trying something new with the visual style of “How to Rob a Bank.” The movie mixes traditional action filmmaking with elements borrowed from TikTok and Instagram. Some scenes use a portrait-mode orientation that looks like someone recorded them on a phone.
Early test screenings have drawn positive reactions. The InSneider called the movie “groundbreaking” because of how it combines social media visual language with traditional filmmaking. The DIY approach seems to be working based on the early buzz.
Pete Davidson described the movie as “totally f*cking insane” when he introduced footage at CinemaCon earlier this year. David Leitch also brought motorcyclists wearing wolf masks to the event, who threw cash into the audience while doing acrobatics.
