Christopher Nolan finally explained why he chose Matt Damon to play the legendary Greek hero Odysseus in his upcoming epic film The Odyssey. The director said Damon’s special bond with moviegoers was the main reason behind his decision.

Nolan needed someone who could carry a complicated character like Odysseus through a long and difficult journey. The filmmaker believed Damon had the rare skill to make viewers care deeply about his characters, which was important for a story where the hero faces many struggles and makes tough choices.

“You need somebody who will take the audience on this journey,” Nolan said in an interview with The Associated Press. “With Matt, he’s able to combine that iconic sort of superhero thing with a very, very emotionally accessible and comprehensible person”.

The director pointed to Damon’s past work as proof of his abilities. He mentioned Damon’s role in The Martian, where he played a regular guy fighting to stay alive in a harsh environment. He also brought up Damon’s performance as Jason Bourne, a skilled action hero dealing with impossible situations.

What Makes Matt Damon Right for Odysseus

Nolan said Damon’s previous roles showed the qualities he wanted for Odysseus, a character who feels both like a regular person and someone special. The director needed an actor who could make the audience connect with Odysseus while also showing the heroic side of the character.

This is not the first time Nolan and Damon have worked together. They previously teamed up on Interstellar (2014) and Oppenheimer (2023). Damon played smaller parts in those movies, but now he takes on the lead role in Nolan’s most ambitious project yet.

Damon shared his thoughts about playing Odysseus during the Mumbai premiere. “It was fantastic. It was the experience of a lifetime,” the Hollywood star told PTI. He talked about how getting lost has been a common theme in his movies, from Saving Private Ryan to Interstellar and The Martian.

“I’m happy to keep getting lost,” Damon said. He expressed joy at getting to play a character from a story that is almost 3,000 years old and has inspired countless poems, stories, and movies over the centuries.

The Star-Studded Cast of The Odyssey

Matt Damon leads an impressive group of actors in Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem. He plays Odysseus, the king of Ithaca who tries to return home after the Trojan War.

Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, Odysseus’ wife who waits for him at home. Tom Holland takes on the role of Telemachus, their son. The cast also includes Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and many other well-known actors.

Nolan has faced some criticism about his casting choices for the film. When asked about the backlash, he stayed calm and said such reactions are normal before a movie comes out.

“Comes with the territory,” Nolan said. “But look, these conversations that happen before people see the film, they’re always irrelevant, because no one having them knows what the film actually is yet”.

The director compared this situation to the criticism he received while making his Batman trilogy. Some casting decisions were questioned back then too, but the movies turned out fine. Nolan said he learned from those experiences that filmmakers should focus on making the best movie possible instead of worrying about outside opinions.

“All I can do is make the best film I possibly can in the most sincere way,” he said.

A Challenging Production Across the Globe

Making The Odyssey was no easy task. The production took place in multiple countries, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Scotland, and the United States. Damon described it as the most challenging film of his career.

“Some days started with a hike up a mountain and then a hike down altogether at the end of the day,” Damon said. He mentioned that everyone on set worked together without special treatment, all for the love of cinema.

Damon also talked about the difficult filming locations. “We were on a boat. The rule number one in Hollywood is never go on a boat. We were on a boat for months,” he said. The cast and crew also worked at the top of mountains and inside a cave for two weeks.

The Odyssey marks a major step forward in filmmaking technology. It is the first feature film ever shot entirely on IMAX film cameras. This format is so demanding that the production team had to create new equipment to make it work. The shoot used 2.1 million feet of film, which is about 640 kilometers.

Nolan has said he expected the film to be difficult because of this technical challenge. The movie is also three hours long, making it a true epic in every sense.

The Odyssey Hits Theaters Soon

The Odyssey is scheduled to release in theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026. The film had its world premiere in London on July 6, 2026, at the Empire Leicester Square.

The movie follows Odysseus on his dangerous journey back to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Along the way, he faces many obstacles and monsters while trying to return to his wife and son.

Nolan and the cast recently visited Mumbai for the film’s India premiere. During their visit, they enjoyed local experiences like having tea and bun maska at the Olympia Coffee House in Colaba.

“I am coming to Mumbai again! This is not the first time I am here in Mumbai. But it is the first time that we get the chance to launch a film here,” Nolan told the audience. “For many years, I have wanted to come here and launch one of our films and experience it with the Indian audiences, who are some of the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable cinematic audiences in the world”.

Damon has also visited India before, having shot The Bourne Supremacy in the country.

The film has a reported budget of $250 million. It is produced by Syncopy and distributed by Universal Pictures.
