Christopher Nolan’s latest movie ‘The Odyssey’ has taken the global box office by storm. The film, which came out last month, has already made more than $264 million worldwide during its opening weekend. This marks the biggest debut of Nolan’s career. As audiences around the world watch the epic story of Odysseus on the big screen, a small Italian island is now preparing for a wave of visitors.
Favignana, the largest of the Egadi Islands, sits about 7 kilometers (4 miles) off the western coast of Sicily. The island has only around 3,000 permanent residents. But that number could grow very quickly. The island served as a key filming location for Nolan’s movie. It stood in for Ithaca, the homeland of Odysseus. Now, local leaders and business owners are getting ready for what they call the “Nolan effect”.
The Island That Became Ithaca
The filmmakers chose Favignana for its dramatic landscape. The Castello di Santa Caterina, a 15th-century fortress on top of the island’s highest hill, became Odysseus’ palace in the movie. Set designer Ruth De Jong described the location as an epic landscape where you could see water everywhere and the ships could pull up. The production team also built a pig farm and a hut for the character Eumaeus, played by John Leguizamo. Nolan also filmed in the coves and beaches around Favignana and on the nearby islet of Preveto.
The production team spent several months on the island between late 2024 and spring 2025. They employed about 500 extras and workers. Mayor Giuseppe Pagoto estimated that the shoot brought between €1 million and €2 million ($1.15 million to $2.3 million) in local spending.
A Permanent Exhibition in the Works
Local authorities want to turn the film’s connection into a lasting attraction. With support from Sicily’s culture department and Universal Pictures, a permanent exhibition could open as early as October at the former Florio tuna-processing plant. This building served as the production’s headquarters during filming.
“The idea is to allow visitors to experience the different stages of the production and see some of the costumes and equipment used in the movie,” Favignana Mayor Giuseppe Pagoto told Reuters.
Local businesses are hoping the film will boost tourism, similar to how the long-running TV series “Inspector Montalbano” increased visitors along Sicily’s southeastern coast.
“We believe all of western Sicily could become more attractive to American visitors thanks to The Odyssey,” said Giacomo Incarbona, head of the local hotel operators‘ association.
What Life Was Like During Filming
The film crew became part of daily life on the small island. Incarbona, whose three-star hotel housed members of the hair and makeup departments, shared some memorable moments.
“Nolan would cycle through town and greet everyone. Hollywood actress Zendaya, who played Athena, would sit in the square reading a book,” he said.
These personal touches helped build a strong connection between the production team and the local community.
Big Money Expected from Film Tourism
Film tourism is a growing part of the travel industry. The U.N. World Tourism Organization estimates that destinations shown in hit films can see visitor numbers rise by 25% to 40%. Consultancy Future Market Insights predicts the sector could be worth almost $157.5 billion globally by 2036.
For Favignana, the numbers look very promising. According to Variety, tourists inspired by the blockbuster could bring in about $287 million over the next three years. In the long run, that number could exceed $500 million. To put that in perspective, HBO’s “The White Lotus” Season 2, which filmed in the Sicilian town of Taormina in 2022, has generated about €138 million ($158 million) in tourism revenue so far. “The Odyssey” could bring in more than twice that amount.
Sicilia Film Commission chief Nicola Tarantino expects a big increase in international visitors, especially from the United States.
“We are very proud that Sicily is a real protagonist of this film,” Tarantino said. “Through Nolan’s vision, these locations are entering the imagination of millions of spectators around the world, giving new value to a unique landscape and cultural heritage.”
New Hotels and Resorts on the Way
The island is already seeing interest from big investors. International investors from North America, the Middle East, and India have reached out to the municipality about high-end tourism opportunities ahead of the 2027 season. The abandoned former Valtur holiday village will be redeveloped as a five-star resort. The historic Palazzotto Florio in the island’s main square is being turned into a luxury hospitality project set to open in June 2027.
“For years, people renovated homes and turned them into B&Bs. Now we are seeing entrepreneurs invest in and redevelop major assets across the island,” Mayor Pagoto said.
The Challenge of Overtourism
While the island welcomes the attention, local leaders are also cautious. Favignana wants to avoid the problems of overtourism that have hurt popular destinations like Venice, Florence, and the Dolomites. The island’s population can already grow from 3,000 to between 40,000 and 50,000 during summer peak times.
“A shock wave could hurt us,” Incarbona said.
Hotel operators hope the film will extend the tourist season into spring and fall, rather than causing a sudden surge of visitors during the busiest months. This would help the local economy without overwhelming the island’s infrastructure and natural beauty.
The Global Success of ‘The Odyssey’
The film’s success at the box office has been remarkable. ‘The Odyssey’ brought in $123.5 million domestically and $263.7 million globally on its opening weekend. The film holds a 97% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Half of the ticket buyers were between the ages of 18 and 34.
The movie has also sparked interest in the original Homer poem. On the opening day of the film, listens to the audiobook of “The Odyssey” jumped more than 500% on Spotify. The BBC reported a 680% increase in listeners to the poem since the film’s release, with more than 80% of listeners being Gen Z or millennials.

What This Means for Favignana
The island of Favignana is at a turning point. The film has put this small Italian island on the map for millions of moviegoers around the world. Local authorities are working to create lasting attractions that will keep visitors coming long after the movie leaves theaters. The permanent exhibition at the former tuna plant is just one example of how the island plans to capitalize on its new fame.
At the same time, the island’s leaders are thinking carefully about how to manage growth. They want to avoid the mistakes of other tourist destinations that became too crowded. The goal is to create a sustainable tourism model that benefits the local economy without damaging the island’s character or environment.
For now, Favignana is enjoying its moment in the spotlight. The island that once served as the backdrop for an ancient epic is now writing a new chapter in its history, thanks to one of the biggest movies of the year.
