HBO has officially confirmed that Nicholas Hoult will join the cast of its upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ television series as Gilderoy Lockhart for the second season. The casting, announced on August 11, 2026, places the 36-year-old British actor in one of the wizarding world’s most flamboyant and fraudulent roles. Hoult will portray the celebrity wizard who becomes Hogwarts’ Defence Against the Dark Arts professor in the adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. He takes over a part previously played by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film of the same name.

Gilderoy Lockhart is one of the most memorable characters from J.K. Rowling’s second book. He arrives at Hogwarts as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, presenting himself as a famous adventurer and bestselling author. Nicholas Hoult’s casting carries a notable connection to the franchise’s history. Twenty-five years ago, Hoult auditioned for the role of Harry Potter in the original film series. Despite multiple callbacks, the part went to Daniel Radcliffe.
Hoult was then invited to try out for Draco Malfoy. “I don’t think I got that either,” he later admitted. He joked that he should have “gradually audition[ed] for every role in Harry Potter until they were like, ‘No’”.
In a 2024 interview, Hoult joked about trying out for the same character on the HBO series, which was in development at the time. “I think I can probably play 11 still,” he told host Josh Horowitz. “I’ll just walk in with some glasses and a scar on my head and be like, ‘Hey, what’s up’”.
