Netflix recently released Conversations with a Killer: The Charles Manson Tapes, a three-part documentary series that looks into the mind of one of America’s most infamous criminals. The series features previously unreleased prison phone calls, firsthand accounts, and archival footage. As viewers watch the documentary and revisit the horrifying 1969 murders, many are asking about Charles Manson’s personal life, specifically his children.

Charles Manson had four known sons, all born before the Tate-LaBianca murders that made him famous. Each of his children has tried to escape their father’s dark shadow in different ways. Two of them have passed away, while the others have built quiet lives far from the public eye.

Charles Manson’s First Son: Charles Manson Jr. (Jay White)

Charles Manson Jr. was born on April 10, 1956, to Rosalie Jean Willis. Manson and Willis married in 1955 when Manson was 20 and Willis was just 15. They met at a bar in West Virginia shortly after Manson got out of a reformatory.

The couple moved to California to be with Manson’s mother, but he was soon arrested for car theft. Their marriage fell apart when Manson went back to prison. Willis left Manson and took their son with her.

Charles Manson Jr. later changed his name to Jay White to separate himself from his father’s terrible reputation. He took his stepfather’s last name. Despite this change, he could never fully escape who his father was.

On June 29, 1993, at age 37, Jay White died by suicide. White’s estranged son, Jason Freeman, believes his father never got over the psychological burden of being Charles Manson’s child.

When Charles Manson died in prison on November 19, 2017, at age 83, a judge ruled that Jason Freeman was Manson’s legal grandson and gave him Manson’s body. Freeman has spoken publicly about wanting to change how people view his family’s legacy.

Charles Manson’s Second Son: Charles Luther Manson (Jay Charles Warner)

Charles Luther Manson was born in September 1960 to Leona Rae Musser, who also went by the name “Candy Stevens”. Musser married Manson in December 1959. The couple divorced three years later, and Charles Luther never knew his father.

Like his older brother, Charles Luther changed his name to Jay Charles Warner to distance himself from the Manson name.

Jay Charles Warner passed away in 2007. Not much is known about his life, as he kept a very low profile and stayed out of the public eye.

Charles Manson’s Third Son: Valentine Michael Manson (Michael Brunner)

Valentine Michael Manson was born on April 15, 1968, to Mary Theresa Brunner. Mary Brunner was one of the first members of the Manson Family cult.

Michael was born just 14 months before the horrific murders that would make his father famous. He was later adopted by his mother’s parents and grew up away from the cult.

Today, Michael Brunner is believed to be Charles Manson’s only living son. He lives a very quiet life in the Midwest on a 56-acre property with his partner, where they grow some of their own food. He works in manufacturing and has an adult son.

In 2018, Brunner was legally removed from the list of possible heirs to Manson’s estate because he had been adopted. He has completely separated himself from his father’s legacy and wants nothing to do with the Manson name.

Charles Manson’s Fourth Son: Daniel Arguelles

For decades, everyone believed Charles Manson had only three sons. But in 2022, a DNA test revealed a shocking truth: Manson had a fourth child.

Daniel Arguelles discovered that Charles Manson was his father through an Ancestry.com DNA test he had submitted seven years earlier. The test connected him to a half-brother he never knew.

Arguelles’ mother was Darlene Arguelles. When she was just 17 years old, she had a brief relationship with a man she met at a bus stop who went by the name “Charlie Dear”. Ten years later, when she saw Manson making headlines, she realized that Charlie Dear was actually Charles Manson. She died in 2020 without ever telling her son who his father really was.

Arguelles’ story is the subject of another documentary, My Grandfather Charles Manson, which is streaming on Hulu. In the documentary, Arguelles’ daughter, Sophia Maddox, documented her family’s discovery that they are related to the cult leader.

The Netflix Documentary: Conversations with a Killer

Conversations with a Killer: The Charles Manson Tapes started streaming on Netflix on August 12, 2026. The three-part series is directed by Joe Berlinger.

The documentary uses 137 phone calls Manson made from prison to a retired detective during the last nine years of his life. It also includes interviews and archival footage.

Director Joe Berlinger said about the series:

“It’s a horrifying story about a mastermind manipulating other people to do their evil bidding, where these people at the time of the crime, because of drug use and his influence, were remorseless. It was Hollywood’s worst nightmare.”

The documentary looks at the August 1969 murders of actress Sharon Tate (who was pregnant at the time), Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, and Steven Parent. The following night, supermarket executive Leno LaBianca and his wife Rosemary LaBianca were also killed.

While Manson did not physically commit the murders, he was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy. He spent the rest of his life in prison and died in 2017.

The series is the final installment of Netflix’s Conversations with a Killer true-crime series. All three episodes are available to stream now.

How Charles Manson’s Children Have Tried to Move On

Charles Manson’s children have all tried to escape their father’s terrible legacy in different ways. Two of them changed their names and tried to live normal lives. Two have passed away, while the other two live quietly away from the public eye.

None of Manson’s children had any relationship with him. Charles Luther Manson never even met his father. Michael Brunner was raised by his grandparents and has no connection to Manson. Daniel Arguelles didn’t even know who his father was until 2022.

The story of Charles Manson’s children shows how the actions of one person can affect generations. Even though none of his sons chose to be part of his crimes, they have all had to deal with the weight of his name.

The new Netflix documentary has brought renewed attention to Manson’s crimes and his family. For those who want to learn more about his children, Hulu’s My Grandfather Charles Manson offers a personal look at one family’s discovery of their connection to the infamous cult leader.
