Christopher Nolan’s epic film The Odyssey is finally coming home. The blockbuster adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem will be available for digital purchase and rental starting November 17, 2026. On that same day, the movie arrives on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for those who prefer physical copies.
This home release comes four months after the film’s theatrical debut on July 17, 2026. That is a much longer wait than most major studio movies, which usually hit digital platforms within 45 to 60 days. Nolan and Universal Pictures are sticking with the same strategy they used for Oppenheimer, which spent 123 days in theaters before coming to digital and physical media in November 2023.
A Box Office Giant
The Odyssey has been a massive success at the box office. The film has earned about $1.35 billion worldwide. That makes it Nolan’s highest-grossing movie ever. It also recently became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, passing Deadpool & Wolverine.
IMAX showings have played a big role in this success. The film has made $257 million from IMAX ticket sales alone. That makes The Odyssey the highest-grossing IMAX release in the company’s history.
Star-Studded Cast Brings Ancient Epic to Life
Matt Damon leads the cast as Odysseus, the Greek king trying to return home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. The ensemble cast includes Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron.
Other cast members include Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, Himesh Patel, and Samantha Morton.
Critics and Fans Respond
The film has received strong reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, The Odyssey holds a 94% Certified Fresh score. Some sources have reported scores as high as 98% and 99%. This ties the film with The Dark Knight and Memento as Nolan’s highest-rated movie on the platform.
Variety’s Guy Lodge wrote in his review:
“There’s nary a dull moment in the director’s typically muscular, temporally complex interpretation.”
He added that despite “a fine, bone-weary turn from Damon as the wandering king of Ithaca, it’s more sensually than emotionally felt.”
What to Expect from the Home Release
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray edition is listed as a three-disc set, while the standard Blu-ray comes as a two-disc set. The digital version will be available for both rental and purchase.
Retailers like Barnes & Noble have already listed a 4K UHD Steelbook edition. The Steelbook pre-orders appeared online briefly before being taken down. Fans of physical media may want to act quickly when pre-orders officially go live, as similar Steelbook releases for Oppenheimer sold out fast and later sold for over $100 on resale markets.
Official details about special features have not been announced yet. Universal may wait until October to share the full home release details, following the same pattern they used for Oppenheimer.

Streaming Plans Remain Unclear
While the digital release date is now known, subscription streaming plans are less certain. Since Universal Pictures distributes the film, it will likely stream first on Peacock. That could happen in late 2026 or early 2027. After its Peacock run, the film may move to Netflix for a 10-month window.
A Long Theatrical Journey
Nolan’s commitment to the theatrical experience is clear. The nearly three-hour epic opened exclusively in theaters on July 17. The four-month window before digital release gives moviegoers plenty of time to see it on the big screen.
The Odyssey was filmed entirely with IMAX cameras. It is the first film shot completely with this technology. The production budget was estimated at $250 million.
The film premiered in Mumbai, India, before its worldwide release. India was also among the first countries to open IMAX bookings.
