Elon Musk has finally shown the world a Tesla Roadster that can lift off the ground, flip in mid-air, and land on its wheels. The demonstration took place on October 15, 2026, at a SpaceX test site in McGregor, Texas, and was livestreamed on Tesla’s X account. Musk told the crowd that the future promised flying cars, and now it finally has them.

The car is not a full flying vehicle. It uses cold-gas thrusters developed with SpaceX technology to make short jumps and perform mid-air stunts. Production is not expected until 2028, and the car is not approved for public roads yet.

What The Roadster Actually Did At The Demo

The demonstration was a series of stunts, not a simple drive-by. In one sequence, the Roadster raced up a curved ramp, drove upside down using a suction fan system, launched itself into the air, and completed a mid-air flip before landing on its wheels. In another, the car jumped over a line of parked Teslas and lowered itself back to the ground in a cloud of smoke.

Tesla says the car can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 0.81 seconds with the thrusters engaged and reach a top speed of 230 mph. The thrusters are not designed for sustained flight. They provide short bursts of lift and control for stunts and quick acceleration.

Musk described the collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX as the reason the car exists at all.

“Flying cars are real. It’s got altitude controls, thrusters and main thrusters in the rear. So it can basically fly like a rocket, it can do rolls, crazy gymnastics.”
— Elon Musk at the launch event

He also warned that the car is not fully ready for everyday use. “I’m not sure it’s necessarily legal in all jurisdictions,” Musk said during the event. “But there will be such a car that someone can own”.

Musk’s 2018 Promise Finally Gets A Demo

The flying Roadster idea is not new. Musk first talked about putting rocket thrusters on a Tesla during a 2018 appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience. Rogan laughed at the idea at the time. Musk later discussed the concept with Jay Leno in 2020, explaining how cold-gas thrusters could be hidden behind the license plate.

After the October 15 demo, Musk posted a short video of the stunt on X with a message that directly referenced the years of doubt.

“Turns out the future does have flying cars.”
— Elon Musk on X

The post quickly became one of the most shared pieces of content from the event. Musk also joked before the demo that “success is not guaranteed, but fun is 100% guaranteed”.

The Internet Split Between Awe And Eye Rolls

Social media reaction was not a single wave of praise. The demonstration triggered two very different responses at the same time. Some users called the stunt incredible and compared it to science fiction movies. Others questioned whether a short jump and a flip should be called flying at all.

Tech reviewer Marques Brownlee, known as MKBHD, posted a question on X that summed up the skeptical side.

“They really just got on stage and said this newly designed 4000+ pound car can do flips and go half the speed of sound (380+mph) and will ship in 2028. This is a prank, right?”
— Marques Brownlee on X

The “Where’s the flying?” complaint spread quickly. Critics pointed out that the car cannot take off from a standstill and cruise through the air like a helicopter or a plane. It climbs a ramp, jumps, and lands. Times of India reported that some users mocked the stunt as “falling with style”.

Memes took over the conversation within hours. One of the biggest jokes compared the flying Roadster to the long-delayed video game Grand Theft Auto 6. Users posted variations of the line “We got flying cars before GTA 6”, and the joke spread far enough that even the White House used the comparison in a social media post.

Other memes focused on everyday problems a flying car would create. People asked whether car insurance would cover mid-air collisions, how traffic police would pull over a flying car, and what would happen to a cup of coffee during an unexpected flip.

Praise Came From Tech Leaders Too

Not every reaction was a joke. Several major tech figures posted positive messages about the demo. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who had previously asked for his Roadster reservation deposit back after waiting years, wrote on X: “Wow the new roadster looks quite amazing, good job @elonmusk”. Angel investor Jason Calacanis said the videos looked like “science fiction” and asked what would happen if the car could stay in the air for five or ten minutes.

Analyst Gene Munster offered a more measured view. He wrote that the demo was “an engineering flex with no commercial value beyond embarrassing traditional car makers”.

Production Date, Price, And The Road Ahead

Tesla has not announced a final sale price. The company’s reservation page showed deposits of $50,000 for the Performance version and $250,000 for the Thrust version equipped with the boosters. Reports estimate the car will cost around $200,000 when it reaches buyers.

Mass production is scheduled to begin in 2028. The Roadster has been delayed multiple times since Tesla first promised deliveries in 2020. Regulatory approval for a car that can lift itself off the ground remains an open question. Georgetown Law professor David Vladeck told the Associated Press that states will need a long process before allowing any vehicle like this on public roads.

Musk has said the Roadster will be Tesla’s only manual car and that sales will probably be modest. “It will not move the needle in a major way financially,” he said, according to the Financial Times. For now, the flying Roadster is a demonstration of what Tesla and SpaceX engineers can build together, and the internet is still deciding whether to book a reservation or keep making memes.
