Wheel of Fortune is back for its 44th season, and the long-running game show has arrived with a brand new way to play. The season premiere week kicked off on Monday, September 14, 2026, bringing a fresh twist called Fortune Frenzy that gives contestants a shot at quick cash before the main game even begins.

Hosts Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White are back for their third season together at the helm. The pair announced the new format during an appearance on Good Morning America on September 8, just days before the season debut.

What Is Fortune Frenzy and How Does It Work?

Fortune Frenzy is a rapid-fire opening round that takes place at the very start of each episode. It works a lot like the classic Toss-Up round, but with a major speed boost. According to social correspondent Maggie Sajak, who explained the new segment in a preview clip, 30 seconds are added to the clock, and letters populate the puzzle board just like a regular Toss-Up. Once a contestant solves a puzzle, the next one immediately appears.

There is no cap on how many puzzles a contestant can solve during the Frenzy. Every correct answer is worth $1,000. If a contestant gets a puzzle wrong, a new puzzle replaces it instead of giving the other players a chance to guess. If all the letters appear before anyone solves it, the game moves on with no money awarded.

“There is no limit to how many they can solve,” Maggie Sajak said in the clip. “It gets pretty exciting at the end of Fortune Frenzy”.

Ryan Seacrest explained that the new round serves a practical purpose beyond just adding more gameplay. “A lot of people say, ‘How do you get more games into the show?’” he said. “It’s not a long show, so we’re squeezing more gameplay at the top of the show with a rapid-fire game that we just started to have, which I love”.

He also noted that the fast pace helps contestants settle their nerves. “I think it shakes off the nerves of the contestants at the top because they’re so excited. The adrenaline is pumping and rushing, and they’ve got to focus right in on playing the game,” Seacrest said.

Vanna White agreed, adding, “There’s nothing else to think about but ‘solve that puzzle.’ It’s gotta be quick. They have nothing else on their mind but solving it”.

First Week Contestants and On-Set Moments

The first week of Season 44 featured a group of contestants who walked away with smiles and some extra cash. Photos from the premiere week show players named Ernesto, Barbara, Anthony, and Taylor, among others, celebrating their wins on set.

Vanna White made a statement for the premiere, wearing a purple sparkly dress, while Ryan Seacrest kept it classic in a black suit.

The season also marks the third year of Seacrest and White hosting together. Seacrest took over for Pat Sajak in 2024 after Sajak retired from the main show following 41 years as host. White has been turning letters on the show since 1982.

Announcer Booth Change After Jim Thornton Firing

Season 44 premiered without a familiar voice in the announcer booth. Longtime announcer Jim Thornton was fired from the show following allegations related to an incident on a commercial flight earlier in 2026. Sony Pictures Television suspended Thornton on September 1 and later confirmed his departure.

Thornton had been with Wheel of Fortune since 2010 and became the official announcer in 2011. He was also the announcer for Celebrity Wheel of Fortune starting in 2021.

During the first tapings of the new season, the show did not use an announcer. The hosts walked out with no introductions and no announcements were made, according to reports from the set. An official replacement for Thornton has not been announced.
