Kit Harington has opened up about the deeply personal reason he accepted the role of Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series. The Game of Thrones star revealed that the Harry Potter audiobooks became a vital part of his nightly routine during his sobriety journey, giving the franchise a special place in his heart.
Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Harington explained that he has listened to the Stephen Fry-narrated audiobooks every night for years, a habit that began during a difficult period after he stopped drinking. The actor, who is set to play the famously vain Defense Against the Dark Arts professor in Season 2 of the HBO adaptation, described his decision to join the series as a “very simple, ‘Yes, please!’”
The Bedtime Ritual That Changed Everything
Harington’s connection to the wizarding world goes far beyond casual fandom. The actor shared that he has always struggled with an overactive mind at night, making sleep difficult. “I listen to the Stephen Fry audiobooks. And I do that because my brain is incredibly busy, especially at night, and I’ve always found going to bed very difficult. My brain doesn’t turn off,” Harington said on the podcast.
The situation became even more challenging when he got sober. “When I got sober, that got especially bad. And so I started listening to ‘Harry Potter’ audiobooks, and now they’re the thing I listen to every night. So they have a very special place in my heart,” he added.
Harington has previously spoken about his struggles with alcohol and mental health, having entered a wellness retreat in 2019 following the intense filming schedule of Game of Thrones. The audiobooks became a source of comfort and stability during that period, helping him establish a peaceful bedtime routine.
From Audiobooks to the Small Screen
Before being cast in the HBO series, Harington had already brought Gilderoy Lockhart to life through voice work. He portrayed the character in Audible’s Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions, which were released in December 2025. His performance in the audio production made him familiar with the character’s pompous personality and theatrical nature.
“When I knew they were doing this show, I was like, ‘I think that’s a brilliant idea, I think they can really delve into it further than the films did.’ I’m fully supportive of it,” Harington said. “And then I got called to be in it, and that was just a very simple, ‘Yes, please!’”
The transition from voicing Lockhart to playing him on screen felt natural for Harington. He joked that stepping into the role of the self-absorbed professor was not a stretch. “He’s addicted to himself. He’s just a tiny step to my left,” he said with a laugh.
Replacing Nicholas Hoult in Season 2
Harington joins the Harry Potter series after Nicholas Hoult exited the role due to scheduling conflicts. Hoult, known for his work in X-Men and Superman, was originally announced for the part in August 2026 but had to leave the production when his commitments to other projects conflicted with changes to the series’ filming schedule.
The official Harry Potter Instagram account confirmed the casting change in late August. “Before we begin year two at Hogwarts, there has been a slight change due to schedule: Kit Harington will be stepping into the role of Gilderoy Lockhart,” the post read.
Harington will appear in Season 2, which adapts Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second book in J.K. Rowling’s seven-part series. The character of Lockhart is a celebrated author and wizard who becomes the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts, though his claims of heroic deeds prove to be largely fabricated. Kenneth Branagh portrayed Lockhart in the 2002 film adaptation.
A Lifelong Fan Joins the Wizarding World
Harington has repeatedly described himself as a lifelong Harry Potter fan, a detail that made the casting especially meaningful. “I’ve been a lifelong Harry Potter fan. I was a fan when I was a kid, and then I rediscovered it as an adult, listening to it every night,” he told USA Today. “I listen to it every single night, and it helps me go to sleep, and I know other people do that as well, so they’re really important books to me”.
The actor also expressed enthusiasm for HBO’s decision to adapt the books as a long-form television series rather than another film franchise. “I love the films, but with this, they can really explore the books at their fullest, and for a book nerd like me, that was a really great idea,” he said. “So it was one that I had eyes on, I really wanted to be in it, and the part I’m playing is just the best”.
Filming Secrets and Fatherhood
Filming for Season 2 is currently underway, and Harington has been tight-lipped about what fans can expect. “I feel like there’s sort of HBO snipers everywhere. I can’t say anything. It’s the most secretive thing,” he joked during his Today show interview.
When asked about his character’s appearance, Harington was equally guarded. “Yes, and I’m going to say highly little about anything because it’s very secretive. But yes, I’m engaging with that as we speak,” he said on the podcast.
One aspect of the production that Harington is particularly grateful for is its location. The Harry Potter series films at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, which is close to his home. This allows him to balance his work with being a present father to his two young children. “It films down the road from me. So I get to be a dad; I get to go play in a world I love,” he said. “Genuinely, right now I’m very content”.
Harington also revealed his Hogwarts house allegiance during the podcast, stating simply, “I’m Gryffindor, obviously!”.
