The classic Charles Dickens novel A Tale of Two Cities has received a new television adaptation. Kit Harington, best known for playing Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, leads the cast of this four-part limited series. The show premiered on September 6, 2026, on MGM+ in the United States and BBC One in the United Kingdom. This version of the 1859 story takes a different approach from older adaptations. The creators have framed it as a modern psychological thriller rather than a traditional period drama.
What Is the Series About?
The series takes place in London and Paris in 1782 during the war between Britain and France. The story follows Lucie Manette, played by Mirren Mack. Her life changes when she gets a message from Paris. The message says her father, who she thought was dead for almost 20 years, might still be alive.
The messenger who brings this news is Charles Darnay, played by François Civil. He is a French emigrant who gets arrested and charged with treason. Lucie then asks for help from Sydney Carton, played by Kit Harington. Carton is a brilliant but troubled lawyer. She hopes he can free Darnay so Darnay can take her to Paris to find her father.
This meeting creates a complicated love triangle. Both men want Lucie’s love, and she has to choose between them. The two men look alike but are very different in personality. Their lives become connected in ways they cannot escape.
Kit Harington on Playing Sydney Carton
Harington has spoken openly about why he felt connected to the character of Sydney Carton. In an interview with UPI, he said he has a “very sad, resting face” and that he often gets cast in roles like this. He called Carton a “wonderful, very despondent, anarchic, addicted character”.
“I’ve known him for a long time since reading the book years ago. I’m feeling, ‘Oh, he’s a bit me.’ I think that he struggles with kind of finding any purpose or any meaning in life.”
Harington explained that Carton’s life changes when he meets Lucie. He starts to see hope and joy in the world. The actor also shared his thoughts on why Dickens wrote the novel the way he did. He noted that Dickens was married to one woman but having an affair with another at the time.
“I think that he has written two versions of Charles Dickens — one who is idealized and heroic and wonderful in Charles Darnay and better looking and French, and then a sort of anarchic, shameful, guilty side, which is Sydney Carton.”
Harington sees Carton as someone who views Darnay as the perfect person he will never be. Carton hates Darnay for this but also knows he is smarter and quicker than him.
A Modern Love Triangle
The adaptation places a strong focus on the love story between the three main characters. Harington described it as a “very modern love triangle” set against a world that is falling apart. He told PEOPLE that the story is “timeless but also incredibly current”.
“It’s the right story to tell right now. We loved the idea of this very modern love triangle set against the backdrop of a world that is breaking apart.”
The trailer for the series starts with the famous opening line of the novel: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”. In the trailer, Lucie asks Sydney for help, and he tells her, “You’re all I need,” calling her “the last dream of my soul”.
The Cast and Creative Team
The series has a strong cast. Kit Harington plays Sydney Carton. François Civil plays Charles Darnay. Mirren Mack plays Lucie Manette. Harington praised his co-stars, calling them “incredible”.
The creative team includes Daniel West as the writer and creator. West has worked on shows like Gunpowder and Top Boy. Richard Clark and Hong Khaou directed the series. Clark is known for his work on Outlander. Khaou directed Mr. Loverman and Lilting.
Harington also serves as an executive producer on the project. The series is produced by Federation Stories, Thriker Films, and Federation Studio France.
