Ranma ½ Season 3 Anime Overview: Story, Cast and Production Team

The Ranma ½ remake is produced by MAPPA, the studio known for Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan: The Final Season. Kōnosuke Uda returns as director, having previously worked on One Piece: Dead End and the first two seasons of this remake. Kimiko Ueno handles series composition, with Hiromi Taniguchi on character design and Kaoru Wada composing the music.

The story follows Ranma Saotome, a young martial artist who fell into the cursed springs of Jusenkyo during training in China. Cold water turns him into a girl, while hot water changes him back. His father Genma Saotome arranged for Ranma to marry Akane Tendo, the youngest daughter of his old friend Soun Tendo. The engagement is rocky, the rivals are many, and the martial arts battles are as absurd as they are intense.

Mayumi Tanaka (One Piece‘s Luffy) and Saori Hayami (Demon Slayer‘s Shinobu Kocho) also join the production, though their character names remain undisclosed.

Announcements of the new cast drew surprised reactions from Japanese fans online. Comments included “The new guest voice actors are pure luxury” and “Wait, Masako Nozawa and Mayumi Tanaka?!”, reflecting the star power joining the production.

Ranma ½ Season 2 Episode 12 Recap: Akane’s Duck Disaster and Mousse’s Duel

Season 2 Episode 12, titled “Fowl Play,” delivered a season finale packed with the show’s signature mix of misunderstandings and martial arts mayhem.

The episode opens with Ranma searching for Akane after a splash of cursed spring water sent her flying into a tent. He finds one of her sandals and a female duck sitting in a puddle. Assuming the duck is Akane in her cursed form, Ranma picks it up and rushes back to the Tendo household. A flashback montage plays through key moments of Akane and Ranma’s relationship across the first two seasons as he runs home.

Ranma places the duck in warm bathwater, expecting Akane to transform back. Nothing happens. Soun Tendo, who was in the bathtub at the time, overhears the situation and insists that Ranma take responsibility by marrying the duck. The family begins preparing a wedding ceremony for Ranma and the duck, which repeatedly attacks him during the preparations. Nabiki Tendo quietly observes that she thinks it might just be a regular duck.

Right before the ceremony can proceed, a table crashes onto Ranma’s head. Akane has arrived — and she was never the duck. The real explanation follows, revealing that the duck was simply a duck and Akane had been elsewhere. The misunderstanding resolves, and Akane takes Ranma to the Cat Cafe to deliver a challenge from Mousse.

Mousse, the near-sighted martial artist who transforms into a duck with cold water, challenges Ranma to a duel. The wager: if Mousse wins, he gets to date Shampoo. Akane secretly talked Mousse into the challenge, hoping that getting Shampoo out of the picture would simplify her situation with Ranma. Shampoo, of course, has no interest in Mousse winning. During the duel, she appears to help Mousse by providing him weapons, but the weapons are rigged to backfire on him instead.

Ranma’s pride prevents him from simply letting Mousse win. The duel drags on with Mousse repeatedly getting back up despite taking heavy damage. His obsession with Shampoo drives him to keep fighting long past the point of reason. The episode ends with the status quo restored — Ranma and Akane still engaged, Shampoo still pursuing Ranma, and Mousse still chasing Shampoo. The final scene shows Ranma and Akane rushing to school before they are late, closing the season on an open-ended note that leaves room for the story to continue.

Akane’s role in the episode shows her willingness to scheme for her own benefit, even if the plan backfires. Ranma’s refusal to throw the fight, despite Akane’s request, highlights his stubborn pride and his inability to take the easy path. Mousse’s determination, while comedic, also shows his genuine feelings for Shampoo, however misguided his methods may be. Shampoo’s sly sabotage of Mousse’s weapons demonstrates her loyalty to Ranma and her sharp sense of self-interest.

New Characters and Storylines Coming in Ranma ½ Season 3

The third season will adapt several popular manga arcs that fans have been waiting to see in the remake. The trailer previewed Ryoga Hibiki mastering the Breaking Point Blow (Bakusai Tenketsu), a technique that allows him to destroy boulders with a single touch. His rivalry with Ranma is set to intensify as the two clash with greater stakes.

The Martial Arts Tea Ceremony arc introduces the Daimonji family and their peculiar fighting style. Sentaro Daimonji, voiced by Jun Fukuyama, and the Grand Master, voiced by Masako Nozawa, will appear as Ranma gets tangled in their rituals. The arc is expected to bring a fresh blend of comedy and combat that the series is known for.

Tsubasa Kurenai, voiced by Minami Tanaka, enters the story with feelings for Ukyo Kuonji. Tsubasa’s addition introduces a new dynamic to Ukyo’s character and expands the already crowded web of romantic entanglements at Furinkan High School.

Principal Kuno‘s introduction is also expected, bringing another layer of absurdity to the school setting. The Hiryu Shoten Ha storyline, a powerful technique tied to Ranma’s martial arts growth, has been discussed among fans as a likely adaptation for the season.
