Tank Chair Episode 1 Story Recap and Character Breakdown
Episode 1 introduces Nagi Taira, once the most feared assassin in the underworld. His life changed completely when he took a bullet to the head while shielding his younger sister, Shizuka Taira, from gunfire. The injury left him in a vegetative state, unable to move or speak, confined to a wheelchair. But Nagi’s condition comes with a strange twist: whenever someone directs genuine killing intent toward him, he briefly regains consciousness. During those fleeting moments, he transforms back into the lethal fighter he once was.
Shizuka Taira works as an assassin broker to support herself and her brother. She takes on dangerous contracts and brings Nagi along to each battlefield, calling these outings “rehabilitation.” She believes that exposing Nagi to extreme killing intent is the only way to fully wake him from his coma. For their first major assignment, Shizuka accepts a job to eliminate Arashiyama Goro, the boss of a brutal robbery gang.
Kurosaka Naozumi appears as a former classmate of Nagi who holds a strong sense of rivalry toward him. His sister, Kurosaka Toko, fights alongside him as his partner. Their dynamic adds tension to the story as they cross paths with the Taira siblings.
Dr. Radio, a genius scientist living in hiding inside an abandoned radio tower, is voiced by Yurina Amami. Uzu, a mysterious newcomer who joins the “Academy’s” Class A, is voiced by Gen Sato. Sensei, the founder of the Academy and an absolute ruler with overwhelming power, is voiced by Megumi Ogata.

What Makes Tank Chair Stand Out
The production uses a prescoring method, where voice actors record their performances before the animation is finalized. Directors Tady and Ando mentioned that the cast’s performances sometimes lead to storyboard changes and adjustments in episode length. This approach gives the action scenes and emotional beats a level of authenticity that is uncommon in typical anime production.
Tank Chair is based on a manga that has surpassed 1 million copies in circulation worldwide. The series blends intense action with a deeply personal story about family, sacrifice, and the lengths one person will go to for the people they love.
