The Lanterns season finale has finally arrived, and it delivered answers fans had been waiting for since the very first episode. Episode 8, titled “Dirt and Stars,” dropped on HBO Max on Sunday, October 4, 2026, wrapping up the murder mystery of Hal Jordan while firmly planting the seeds for James Gunn’s upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. The finale revealed who killed Hal Jordan, confirmed the identity of the second Manhunter, and showed exactly how Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart becomes Earth’s new Green Lantern. That final scene does more than just close out the season. It sets the stage for John’s role in Man of Tomorrow, which arrives in theaters on July 9, 2027.

Who Killed Hal Jordan in the Lanterns Finale

The biggest question of the season was answered in the final episode. Sheriff Kerry Kane, played by Kelly Macdonald, was the one who shot Hal Jordan. The reveal came through a flashback showing the moments right before Hal’s death. After Zoe Macon saved Kerry years ago using Manhunter technology to regrow her severed finger, Kerry somehow became pregnant with her son Noah, who turned out to be a Manhunter. When Hal learned the truth about Noah, he told Kerry what he had discovered. Kerry shot Hal out of fear, not malice. She was terrified of what the Guardians of the Universe might do to her son and the town. As Hal was dying, he told Kerry he loved her.

The show’s creative team explained that this was never meant to be a simple whodunit. Damon Lindelof, a co-writer on the series, said:

“In order for all of the emotional progression to feel real and earned and lived, we were sticking to that, and there wasn’t going to be a rug-pull.”

Chris Mundy, the showrunner, also explained the choice to focus on character over action:

“There was never a version of the finale that was more action-oriented. If we landed it emotionally with [Hal and John], we would’ve done our job.”

The finale confirmed that Hal Jordan is truly dead. There was no resurrection, no last-minute twist bringing him back. Sinestro, played by Ulrich Thomsen, claimed he had a way to bring Hal back to life, but that door was left untouched. Fans hoping for a surprise return will have to wait and see if that storyline ever gets picked up.

John Stewart Becomes Earth’s New Green Lantern

Aaron Pierre‘s John Stewart took center stage in the finale. After confronting Noah Macon about his Manhunter identity and his plan to use a fear-powered lantern to get revenge on the Guardians, John made a decision that changes his place in the DC Universe. He took Hal Jordan’s ring and charged it using the lantern that Sinestro had forged for Noah. That lantern was built on a dead planet and is contaminated with traces of yellow fear energy, making it different from any standard Green Lantern power battery.

John then recited his own oath, one that embraces fear instead of ignoring it:

“In brightest day, in darkest night, I’ll embrace my fear, I’ll do what’s right. I choose this ring. I choose this fight, in service to this lantern’s light.”

Tom King, a co-creator of the show, explained what this means for John’s status:

“What we see at the end is that John is not 100% a Green Lantern anymore. He has a Lantern that has a bit of yellow in it, has a bit of fear in it. It’s an unsanctioned Lantern, as Guy says.”

John then summoned Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion, to Rushville. He told Guy to protect the stars and the rest of Space Sector 2814 while he stays on Earth to watch over the planet. This split arrangement sets up a unique dynamic for the two Green Lanterns moving forward.

How the Lanterns Finale Sets Up Man of Tomorrow

The finale’s closing moments directly connect to Man of Tomorrow. Aaron Pierre is confirmed to reprise his role as John Stewart in the film, which wrapped principal photography in late August 2026. James Gunn has completed an assembly cut of the movie and has already started working on his next DCU project.

Man of Tomorrow will pit Superman, played by David Corenswet, and Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, against the alien villain Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger. The film also brings back Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Xolo Maridueña as Blue Beetle. Nathan Fillion will also return as Guy Gardner, meaning both Green Lanterns will share the screen in the sequel.

David Corenswet compared the film’s approach to The Empire Strikes Back, saying:

“The opening of The Empire Strikes Back is really interesting because we’re reunited with Luke and Han and Leia. And we know that a lot of time has passed and there’s been a lot that’s happened in that time, but we feel like we’re still sort of in the midst of it. And it feels like this is the opening of the second phase of our story.”

John Stewart’s new status as an unsanctioned, Earth-bound Green Lantern raises interesting questions for the film. Man of Tomorrow will involve ARGUS’s off-planet prison called Salvation and a cosmic threat in Brainiac. John’s decision to focus only on Earth could put him at odds with the larger Green Lantern Corps, especially since the Guardians of the Universe are not happy about his independent operation. Den of Geek noted that John’s Earth-only patrol could create tension with the Corps, which typically handles threats across entire space sectors.
