The Season 2 Premiere Resolves the Season 1 Cliffhanger

The Season 1 finale ended with Tom Weaver (played by Chris Mulkey) kidnapping Tate Dutton (Brecken Merrill) and threatening to kill him unless Kayce sold him the East Camp land. The premiere, titled “All Hat No Cattle,” picks up immediately after those events.

Kayce goes rogue from the marshal service to rescue his son. The episode also resolves the fate of Dolly Weaver (Ellyn Jameson), Tom’s daughter, who had developed a relationship with Kayce. Dolly was killed when she and Tom drove off a cliff while fleeing from Kayce, while Tom survived and was taken into custody.

Showrunner Spencer Hudnut explained the decision to kill off Dolly in an interview with TheWrap.

“I had thought throughout last season that Dolly was always in on it — in my mind at least — so when we finished production last year, she was much guiltier than she actually turned out to be. Her being in the dark of her father’s plan made her fate all the more tragic.”

The Full Cast: Who Returns and Who Joins

Luke Grimes leads the cast as Kayce Dutton, continuing the role he originated in Yellowstone. He is joined by returning series regulars Logan Marshall-Green as Pete “Cal” Calvin, Arielle Kebbel as Belle Skinner, Ash Santos as Andrea Cruz, and Tatanka Means as Miles Kittle.

Brecken Merrill returns as Tate Dutton, and Mo Brings Plenty and Gil Birmingham reprise their roles as Mo and Thomas Rainwater.

The biggest addition is Jefferson White, who returns as Jimmy Hurdstrom from Yellowstone in a recurring role. CBS confirmed his return during the network’s virtual press day in September 2026. Marque Richardson also joins the cast as assistant U.S. attorney Patrick Burns.

Luke Grimes spoke about working with Jefferson White again during a CBS press event.

“We’re just trying to make the best show we can. Through those convos, Jimmy came up. It’s a character everybody loves so much. Personally, I really liked working with Jefferson.”

Season 2 Raises the Stakes for Tate and Kayce

The premiere establishes that Tate is turning 18 and wants a larger role in protecting his family. Showrunner Spencer Hudnut told TheWrap that Tate’s near-death experience will push him in a darker direction.

“Tate is feeling — having nearly had his life taken from him — I think he’s going to start to resort to trying to make sure that never happens to him again, in ways that are alarming and somewhat scary to Kayce.”

Arielle Kebbel, who plays Belle Skinner, also spoke about the season’s intensity in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“I think people may be surprised to see just how bad it gets. I really appreciate that, because it’s a nod to the Yellowstone ongoing battle of land and wealth and power and money, and how far people will go to protect their land.”

Ratings and Reception for Marshals

The series premiere on March 1, 2026 drew 20.6 million multiplatform viewers within seven days, making it the most-watched network original series premiere without a football lead-in since 2017. The strong performance led CBS to renew Marshals for Season 2 after just two episodes had aired.

Critical reception has been mixed. The series currently holds a 47% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 57/100 on Metacritic. Reviews for the Season 2 premiere have been divided, with some critics praising the resolution of the Tom Weaver arc and others noting that the show’s case-of-the-week structure remains its biggest limitation.

Behind the Scenes: Filming and Production

Production on Season 2 began in Park City, Utah, in June 2026. Luke Grimes revealed that the most challenging scene to film in the premiere was the river fight sequence.

“The biggest challenge was 100% doing the fight in the river.”

Spencer Hudnut serves as showrunner and executive producer. Taylor Sheridan remains involved as an executive producer through his overall deal with Paramount,
