Magic Knight Rayearth is returning to screens after more than three decades. The new anime reboot of CLAMP’s classic series premieres worldwide on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, with Crunchyroll streaming the show exclusively for international audiences. The series brings back Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji for a fresh adaptation that starts from the very beginning of the original manga.

The Story of Magic Knight Rayearth

In Cephiro, the will of the heart shapes reality. The three girls meet Guru Clef, a mage who explains that they were summoned to save Princess Emeraude. The princess serves as the Pillar of Cephiro, and her prayers keep the world stable. High Priest Zagato has taken her captive, and without her prayers, Cephiro is falling apart.

The girls are told they are the legendary Magic Knights destined to save the world. To complete their mission, they must learn magic, obtain weapons, awaken the Mashin mecha, and face Zagato.

Hikaru Shidou: The Brave Leader

Hikaru Shidou is a middle school student with a strong sense of justice and a brave personality. She is voiced by Ayane Sakura, known for roles like Ochaco Uraraka in My Hero Academia and Nino Nakano in The Quintessential Quintuplets.

Hikaru is the one who first hears Princess Emeraude’s voice calling for help. Her determination and refusal to give up drive the group forward, even when the challenges in Cephiro seem impossible to overcome.

Umi Ryuuzaki: The Skilled Swordswoman

Umi Ryuuzaki comes from a wealthy family and has trained in fencing. She is voiced by Rumi Okubo, known for roles like Nene Himekawa in Tune In to the Midnight Heart and Aster in The Eminence in Shadow.

Umi is confident and sometimes stubborn, but her fencing skills make her a natural fighter. Her journey in Cephiro challenges her to look beyond her own pride and learn to trust her teammates.

Fuu Hououji: The Calm Strategist

Fuu Hououji is a quiet and observant girl who wears glasses. She is voiced by Rie Takahashi, known for roles like Megumin in KonoSuba and Emilia in Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-.

Fuu is the most analytical of the three, often thinking through problems before acting. Her calm nature balances Hikaru’s energy and Umi’s confidence. Rie Takahashi described Fuu as a very observant girl during a recent interview about the new series.

Supporting Cast and Characters

Princess Emeraude is the Pillar of Cephiro, whose prayers maintain the world’s stability. She is voiced by Saori Hayami, known for Shinobu Kocho in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and Yor Forger in Spy x Family.

Guru Clef is the mage who summons the three girls and explains their mission. He is voiced by Yuki Kaji, known for Eren Yeager in Attack on Titan and Shoto Todoroki in My Hero Academia.

Staff Behind the Reboot

Yui Miura directs the anime at E&H Production, with Takayuki Sano as co-director. Shigeru Murakoshi handles series composition. Satomi Watanabe designs the characters and serves as chief animation director. Hiroki Mutaguchi designs the Mashin mecha.

Yuki Kajiura, Takumi Ozawa, and Shiho Terada compose the music. Sunghoo Park serves as creative producer. TMS Entertainment, Kodansha, and TV Asahi are involved in production, with planning production by UNLIMITED PRODUCE by TMS.

The opening theme, “Otome no Ken,” is performed by Toaka. The ending theme, “Seira,” is performed by Yurina Kawaguchi.

Background on the Original Series

Magic Knight Rayearth was originally serialized in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine from 1993 to 1996, with six collected volumes. CLAMP, a creative group of four women manga artists, created the series.

The original anime adaptation aired from 1994 to 1995 with 49 episodes, produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha (now TMS Entertainment). A three-part OVA was released in 1997. The original series is currently available on Netflix and Crunchyroll.
