Chicago P.D. kicked off its 14th season on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, with a premiere that forced Officer Eva Imani (Arienne Mandi) to make a life-changing decision about her sister Shari (Selin Çuhadaroğlu). The episode, titled “Demolition,” resolved the cliffhanger from the Season 13 finale while also setting up major changes for the Intelligence Unit, including Kevin Atwater’s (LaRoyce Hawkins) upcoming exit and a new FBI presence in the office.
The Choice Imani Had to Make
Season 13 ended with Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) telling Imani that the decision about her sister belonged to her. Shari had been kidnapped as a young child and raised by a criminal who ran a s*x trafficking operation. By the time Imani found her, Shari had developed Stockholm syndrome and did not trust her sister, only trusting the “family” that raised her. Shari had also committed a murder.
Voight offered Imani a way out: they could bury the evidence, or Shari could face the consequences. Imani chose the harder path. She decided to let the charges stand, hoping that jail time would actually help her sister in the long run.
Shari took a plea deal and was sent to a nearby detention center to serve time for a lesser crime. She was expected to be released at some point. Imani became a devoted visitor, seeing her sister in prison every single day in the hopes of getting her to remember their shared past and trust her.
The pressure Imani put on Shari eventually became too much. Shari removed Imani from her approved visitors list at the end of the premiere. Imani could no longer visit her in prison. The move left Imani devastated and questioning everything she had worked toward.
“She’s really going to be questioning her identity as the season moves forward,” showrunner Gwen Sigan told CinemaBlend about Imani’s emotional state. “It’s really, I think, the exact opposite of everything that Imani would have ever imagined and hoped for.”
“It’s in her nature to be hopeful,” Arienne Mandi told TV Insider about her character. “I think that she will always strive for a relationship, even if she doesn’t know what’s best for her. Her goal is to make her sister remember. She’s not going to give up after all these years.”
The Parole Officer Case That Drove the Episode
The main case of the week involved the shooting of a parole officer. The Intelligence Unit investigated the attack, and the case carried personal stakes for members of the team. Officer Dante Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) worked closely with Imani during the investigation, providing quiet support as she navigated her personal struggles.
Torres has been described by Mandi as “a silent person there with her along on this whole journey.” Voight had asked Torres to stay close to Imani and make sure she was okay. Torres was also the one who dropped Shari off at a safe house alongside Imani earlier in the story.
Atwater’s Big News Before His Exit
Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) received life-changing personal news in the premiere. His partner Tasha Fox (Karen Obilom) is about to give birth to their baby. The news set up Atwater’s departure from the Intelligence Unit after 13 seasons on the show.
LaRoyce Hawkins, who has played Atwater since the series premiered in 2014, will exit as a full-time cast member during Season 14. He is expected to appear in the first two or three episodes to properly close out his character’s storyline.
“He’s so loved and has left such a legacy,” Mandi told TV Insider about Hawkins.
Showrunner Gwen Sigan told TV Guide that the door remains open for Atwater to return in the future. “He’s still in the world. He can come back,” she said. “The door is always open.”
A New FBI Overseer for Intelligence
The biggest surprise of the premiere came at the very end. Changes to District 21 meant that the Intelligence Unit would now have FBI oversight — and the new overseer would be working directly in their bullpen.
The new FBI presence places Voight and his team under a different kind of scrutiny than they have faced before. The showrunner has said this creates a new type of challenge for Voight, who is used to running his unit with very little outside interference.
“It’s going to be a hurdle,” Mandi told TV Insider about the new FBI oversight.
