Episode 2 Recap: The Sheriff’s Request to Mountain Tim
Episode 2 opens with the fallout from the 1st STAGE finish. Gyro Zeppeli crossed the line first, but race promoter Steven Steel overturned the result because Gyro used his Steel Ball Spin during the race. The victory was handed to Sandman, while Gyro received a penalty.
Gyro does not dwell on the setback. He approaches Johnny Joestar and proposes an alliance for the 2nd STAGE. Gyro tells Johnny he intends to finish first, while Johnny should aim for second place. To help Johnny keep up, Gyro gives him a champagne bottle cork and tells him to master the Spin, the mysterious power that Gyro himself uses. Johnny has been fascinated by the Spin ever since he first touched Gyro’s steel ball and felt his legs respond.
A far more disturbing problem emerges as the racers push into the Arizona desert. Several competitors are found brutally murdered during the first leg of the race, and no one noticed until now. The local sheriff asks Mountain Tim, a famed cowboy and racer, to investigate the killings. Mountain Tim begins looking into the deaths while continuing to compete in the race himself.
Johnny and Gyro’s journey through the desert turns into a survival test. Thirst, harsh terrain, and the constant threat of fellow competitors make the 2nd STAGE every bit as dangerous as the first. Their first real threat comes from a rider named Mrs. Robinson, who attacks the pair using the desert’s Jumping Cholla cacti. The cactus needles fly through the air with deadly precision, forcing Johnny and Gyro to fight for their lives.
Gyro’s Spin proves useful in the fight, but the encounter leaves more questions than answers. Mountain Tim later finds Mrs. Robinson unconscious and examines the horseshoe on Robinson’s horse. The shoe does not match the tracks found at the murder scenes, which means the real killer is still out there in the desert.
