Prime Video’s animated Dungeons & Dragons shows have quietly become the best fantasy storytelling on screen. The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein, both adapted from the Critical Role tabletop campaign, have earned perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes scores across every season. No fantasy movie released since 2006 has matched that level of consistent critical and audience approval.

The two shows have done something rare. They took a real-life game of Dungeons & Dragons played by voice actors and turned it into must-watch animated television. The result has outperformed big-budget fantasy films in both reviews and fan loyalty.

What Are The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein

The Legend of Vox Machina is an adult animated fantasy series that premiered on Prime Video in 2022. It adapts the first Critical Role campaign, a livestreamed Dungeons & Dragons game where voice actors Matthew Mercer, Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, and Travis Willingham played together around a table.

The show follows a chaotic group of adventurers in the fictional world of Exandria as they battle world-ending threats. After three acclaimed seasons, Season 4 returned to Prime Video on June 3, 2026, pushing the story toward its final chapter. A fifth and final season has already been confirmed.

The Mighty Nein is the second animated series from Critical Role. It adapts the group’s second campaign and premiered on November 19, 2025. The show is set on a different continent called Wildemount and features a darker, more mature tone compared to its predecessor. A second season is already in the works.

Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Scores Set These Shows Apart

The Legend of Vox Machina has maintained a flawless 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes across all four seasons. Season 4 also holds a 97% audience rating, proving that viewers are just as enthusiastic as critics. The Mighty Nein matched that achievement with a 100% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes as well.

The combined success of both shows has made Prime Video the top destination for Dungeons & Dragons storytelling. The two series have run for a combined total of five seasons so far.

Why These Shows Feel More Like D&D Than Any Movie

The core strength of both shows comes from their source material. Critical Role has been running since 2015, giving the creative team hundreds of hours of character development, world-building, and storylines to draw from.

The animated format also gives the shows an advantage over live-action movies. Magic spells, fantastical creatures, and epic battles that might look odd in live-action come across naturally in animation.

Each show focuses on characters first. The heroes have different backgrounds and motivations. Some are masters of magic, others rely on deception, and a few just love a straight fight. That character-driven approach is what makes the stories feel authentic to the tabletop game experience.

Critical Role Cast Built This From The Ground Up

The journey from a home game to a Prime Video franchise started with a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign in 2019. The original goal was $750,000 for a single animated special. Fans pledged over $1 million in the first hour and the campaign eventually raised $11,385,449 from 88,887 backers, making it the most-funded TV series project in Kickstarter history.

The cast has spoken about how meaningful this journey has been. Travis Willingham and Sam Riegel said in a joint statement:

“It’s so rare for any television series to get to tell a complete story, beginning to end, exactly as it was envisioned. We’re so grateful to our fans, the critters, our partners at Prime Video, and the original Kickstarter backers for bringing this show to life, and turning the numbskulls of Vox Machina into animation legends.”

Dungeons and Dragons Movies Cannot Match This Level

The 2023 film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves earned strong reviews with a 91% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a solid $37 million opening weekend in North America. Despite that success, Paramount canceled plans for a sequel or a spinoff TV show.

Other fantasy movies from the past two decades have had their moments. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish from 2022 was a standout. The Green Knight had its admirers. The How to Train Your Dragon movies were widely praised. But none of them achieved the season-after-season consistency that the Critical Role shows have delivered.

The last fantasy movie to reach a similar level of acclaim was Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth in 2006. Since then, no film has matched what these animated series have done on Prime Video.
