The Legend of Vox Machina returned to Prime Video on June 3, 2026, for its fourth season, and the show made a change that longtime fans of Critical Role had been expecting for years. The team’s beloved bard, Scanlan Shorthalt, stepped away from the group, and a new adventurer named Taryon Darrington took his place among the seven members of Vox Machina. The switch is not a simple recasting. It is a story decision pulled directly from the original Dungeons & Dragons campaign, and it changes the pattern of the show in a way that sets up the final season.
Why Scanlan Left Vox Machina
Scanlan Shorthalt has been one of the most popular members of Vox Machina since the animated series began. Voiced by Sam Riegel, the gnome bard brought humor, music, and unexpected emotional weight to the team. His departure was set up at the end of season 3.
After the defeat of the Chroma Conclave, the members of Vox Machina went their separate ways to handle personal matters. Scanlan learned in season 2 that he had a daughter named Kaylie, and he spent much of seasons 2 and 3 torn between his duty to the team and his wish to make up for lost time with her. The end of season 3 made his choice clear. Scanlan decided to travel with Kaylie and step away from adventuring.
Season 4 picks up a year after those events. Keyleth is completing her Aramenté with Vax by her side. Vex and Percy are living as nobility in Whitestone. Pike and Grog are drifting through taverns and looking for a purpose. Scanlan is absent, traveling with his daughter somewhere else. The show does not bring him back into the fold during the main events of season 4.
Scanlan… he’s off on his own with his daughter, somewhere else, to be determined, to be seen.
That is how Sam Riegel described Scanlan’s situation when speaking about the season 4 time jump. The choice to keep Scanlan off screen for most of the season was not a behind-the-scenes problem. It was a direct adaptation of the original campaign, where Scanlan also left the group for a period to be with Kaylie.
Who Taryon Darrington Is
Taryon Darrington arrives in the opening episode of season 4. He is a wealthy young man from Deastok, a city known for its rare gemstones. Taryon comes from an extremely rich family and has spent most of his life in luxury. He wants to become a famous adventurer and writer, and he sets out to chronicle the deeds of Vox Machina by joining them.
Taryon is voiced by Wayne Brady, the actor, singer, and game show host known for his work in comedy and television. Brady took over the role from Sam Riegel, who originally played Taryon in the Critical Role campaign. The recasting is one of the reasons the character feels different in the animated series.
Taryon is not a bard like Scanlan. He fights with magical gemstones of different sizes, shapes, and colors, and he travels with a mechanical scribe named Doty who records his adventures. He is pompous, extravagant, and often gets in the way. He is also endearing in a way that slowly wins over the rest of the team.
Laura Bailey, who voices Vex, said that Taryon “steals the season” and called him her new favorite character. The rest of the cast agreed that his arrival mixes up the group’s pattern and forces the other members to adjust.
How Wayne Brady Took Over the Role
Sam Riegel and Wayne Brady have known each other for years. They worked together on the Disney series Sofia the First, and that history made the recasting easier. Riegel explained how Brady approached the part.
We told him, ‘You can do whatever you want, make it your own.’ But he said, ‘Nonono, I want this to at least be somewhat similar to what fans are expecting.’ And so we played him some clips, we put together some clips of me doing the character in Campaign One, and he watched them, and he was like, ‘I got it. I can do that better.’
Brady kept the elements that fans expected. He used the pompous attitude, the formal way of speaking, and the mid-Atlantic accent that Riegel had created for the character. Then he added his own style. By the end of recording the season, Riegel said that Brady felt more like Taryon Darrington than he did.
The original meeting between Taryon and Vox Machina was one of the scenes Brady studied closely. That is the moment when Taryon introduces himself to the group and declares, “This will be fun, fun, fun.” Brady also watched the scene where Pike uses flashcards to teach Taryon the names of each team member.
What Taryon’s Arrival Means for the Team
Taryon starts season 4 as an outsider. He tags along like an unwelcome guest, and the other members of Vox Machina are not sure what to make of him. By the middle of the season, he has become a real part of the group. He helps the team break into the Cobalt Soul archives, and he fights alongside them against the Unalive Five. The other members even defend him when Scanlan mocks him.
The change is not permanent in the way some fans might expect. Taryon’s time as an active member of Vox Machina ends before the final battle of season 4. When the team prepares to enter the Whispered One’s realm, Taryon chooses to stay behind. He tells the group, “You always said I got in the way right? …I know real heroes when I see them.” He did not even forge himself an amulet to pass through the portal, which shows that he planned his exit in advance.
Taryon’s choice makes sense for his character. He found real friends among Vox Machina, but being a hero was never his true calling. He will likely return in a supporting role in the final season, joining allies like Kima, Allura, and Gilmore rather than fighting on the front lines.
