The Diplomat Season 4 arrived on Netflix on Thursday, October 15, 2026, with all eight episodes released at once. The season picks up seconds after the Season 3 finale, with Kate Wyler reeling from the discovery that her husband Hal and President Grace Penn secretly stole a Russian nuclear weapon. What follows is a season built on broken alliances, a shocking assassination attempt, a midseason change of power in Britain, and a finale that left every main character walking out of a G7 summit.

The full season is now streaming globally. Here is the complete episode schedule, the new cast members who joined the story, and the production details that shaped how Season 4 was made.

Every episode runs roughly one hour, and the entire season is available for streaming now . Netflix has not split the season into weekly drops, so viewers can watch the full story in one sitting.

New Cast Members and Roles in Season 4

Jodie Whittaker joined the cast in a role that was kept out of the show’s early marketing. The former Doctor Who star plays Bethan Vaughn, a measured and sharp politician who becomes Britain’s new prime minister after Trowbridge’s resignation . Whittaker’s casting was credited only in Netflix’s guest-star billing alongside Celia Imrie, Miguel Sandoval, Rosaline Elbay, and Aidan Turner, and she appeared for only a moment in the official trailer .

Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford were promoted to series regulars for Season 4 after appearing as guest stars in Season 3 . Janney plays President Grace Penn, whose behavior after the assassination attempt becomes the central question of the season. Whitford plays Todd Penn, the First Gentleman, who steps into foreign policy when Kate refuses to carry out the president’s orders .

“We talk about Season 3 as ‘the split,’” creator Debora Cahn told Netflix’s Tudum. “It’s the time when Kate and Hal’s relationship really falls apart. It’s the time when the US-UK relationship really falls apart.”

Returning main cast members include Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler, David Gyasi as Austin Dennison, Ali Ahn as Eidra Park, Rory Kinnear as Nicol Trowbridge, Ato Essandoh as Stuart Hayford, and Nana Mensah as Billie Appiah .

Two familiar characters do not return. Celia Imrie’s Margaret “Meg” Roylin and Michael McKean’s President Rayburn both died in earlier seasons, and the show acknowledged their absence rather than writing around it .

The Real Soldiers and the Nine Locations Behind Windsor Castle

The season opens with two episodes set almost entirely on the grounds of Windsor Castle . Production designer Curt Beech combined nine different real-world locations to create the castle and its surroundings. The exterior and inner courtyard were filmed at Burghley House, while Belvoir Castle, Lancaster House, and the British Foreign Office were used for interiors .

The guards who respond when President Penn is shot were not background actors pulled from a casting call. They were a mix of reservists and former soldiers, and their training changed how the scene felt on set.

“Those were real soldiers,” Keri Russell told Town & Country. Rufus Sewell added, “There’s something so cool about seeing them in action. It did make a difference with them all being real, trained soldiers. Because when sh*t gets real, you can really tell.”

The Oyster Scene That Shaped the Whole Season

A scene from Season 3 — not Season 4 — became the creative starting point for the entire fourth season. In the Season 3 episode “Amagansett,” the two central couples sit down over a tray of oysters. Todd Penn cuts himself while shucking, and the oysters arrive with blood on them. The moment is small, but Debora Cahn said it helped her find what Season 4 was really about.

“The oyster scene, in a way, was the proving ground for what then became a real spine for Season 4, which is how are these couples relating to each other and dealing with the same set of circumstances very differently?” Cahn told Deadline.

The production used 425 local fresh oysters and 72 imported oysters for the scene. Bradley Whitford ate the oysters on camera rather than spitting them out, and Allison Janney added a small prop moment — stuffing an empty pretzel bag behind a sofa cushion — that Cahn called one of her favorite details of the season .

A Shooting Storyline That Echoes The West Wing

Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford both appeared on The West Wing decades before The Diplomat, and Season 4 gave them a storyline that felt familiar. In The West Wing, Whitford’s Josh Lyman was shot in the stomach. In The Diplomat Season 4, Janney’s President Penn is shot in the abdomen outside Windsor Castle .

“Allison and I, we were talking yesterday, we realized, yeah, we both got shot,” Whitford told Decider.

This time, Whitford plays the person waiting for news rather than the person on the operating table. He said that role was harder to play than being the victim, and that the shooting has larger consequences for the season than a single episode.
