Selvi, a Tamil-language drama starring National Award-winning actor Anjali Patil, held its world premiere at the 31st Busan International Film Festival on October 9, 2026, where it played to a full house. The film, which marks the directorial debut of Sailesh Rathnakumar, is one of only two Indian films selected for the festival’s Vision – Asia section. Following the premiere, subsequent screenings of the film also sold out, marking a strong start for the production on the international festival circuit.
What the Film Is About
Selvi follows the story of a migrant home-care nurse, played by Anjali Patil, who works inside the homes of wealthy families. Her shifts can stretch from 12 to as long as 72 hours, leaving her with little time or control over her own life. The narrative begins as a story about migration, friendship, and caregiving, then takes a darker turn when an incident from Selvi’s past comes back into focus. The film explores survival and the difficult choices people make to protect themselves.
The film places the experiences of a migrant care worker at the centre of its narrative, examining the personal cost of a life shaped by demanding work and limited freedom. Anjali Patil plays the title character while also serving as the film’s producer under her banner.
The Cast and Crew Behind Selvi
Anjali Patil leads the cast as Selvi, the migrant home-care nurse. Patil is a National Award-winning actor who has appeared in films across multiple Indian languages. Sailesh Rathnakumar directs the film in his feature debut, having also co-written the screenplay.
The supporting cast includes Swathy Krishnan, Vinoth Kishan, and Archana Padmini. The film features editing by A. Sreekar Prasad, a nine-time National Award winner, and sound design by Anand Krishnamoorthi, who won a National Award for his work on Ponniyin Selvan: Part I.
Selvi is co-produced by the Red Sea Fund, an initiative of the Red Sea International Film Festival, and is supported by Hong Kong Asia Film Financing.
Anjali Patil on the Busan Reception
Anjali Patil attended the world premiere and spoke about the experience of presenting the film at Busan.
“I feel grateful that the film has opened at Busan, a festival that truly belongs to its audiences. Having ‘Selvi’ received by a full house of Korean audiences means a lot to us. When a film resonates with audiences here, it is a strong indication of its potential to connect with people on a much wider scale. That is something we are taking our cue from. ‘Selvi’ is a very personal film, and this journey as both a producer and an actor has meant a great deal to me. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to present an Indian film on such a prestigious international platform.”
Sailesh Rathnakumar on His Debut Feature
Sailesh Rathnakumar described the experience of screening his first film at an international festival.
“Honestly, this still feels like a dream. Having your debut film screened at the prestigious Busan International Film Festival is an overwhelming experience. The audience response has added to my motivation as a filmmaker. The journey has just begun, and there are many more stories to tell. I take away from this experience an even stronger desire to tell stories that resonate with people and make my country, India, proud on the global stage.”
Selection in the Vision – Asia Section
Selvi was selected as one of only two Indian films in the Vision – Asia section of the 31st Busan International Film Festival. The section is dedicated to showcasing new works from Asian filmmakers. The film’s inclusion in this competitive section placed the Tamil production among the festival’s featured Asian cinema selections.
The 31st Busan International Film Festival ran from October 6 to October 15, 2026, in Busan, South Korea.
