Lee Hong-ki of the band FT Island shared his heartbreaking battle with a rare skin disease called hidradenitis suppurativa on the SBS show My Little Old Boy. The idol revealed he has suffered from the condition since childhood, undergoing eight surgeries and facing daily challenges. His story has touched fans worldwide.

The June 15 episode showed Hong-ki visiting a hospital for a check-up. He expressed concerns about new symptoms near his armpit and buttocks, areas commonly affected by the disease.

“Lately, I’ve been feeling a familiar sensation near my armpit. I also wanted to get my buttocks checked, so I came to the hospital,” he said.

What Is Hidradenitis Suppurativa?

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic skin condition that causes painful, pus-filled lumps in sweat gland areas like the armpits, groin, and buttocks. The disease leads to recurring abscesses, inflammation, and scarring. In severe cases, tunnels form under the skin, making movement difficult.

Hong-ki shared that he first noticed symptoms in middle school. One traumatic incident involved a boil bursting during class, soaking his uniform in blood and pus.

“At the time, I didn’t even think about going to the hospital—I just went home early,” he recalled.

Multiple Surgeries and Daily Struggles

The singer has undergone eight surgeries due to the condition. Surgical scars have left him self-conscious, avoiding public bathhouses. His doctor revealed that one abscess was as large as a palm, requiring emergency drainage.

“I’ve suffered from boils since I was young. Because of the scars, I avoid going to public bathhouses,” Hong-ki admitted.

Recent tests showed a new boil forming under his arm, meaning he must continue treatment. Doctors noted that his symptoms might improve in his 40s when male hormone levels decrease.

Lifestyle Changes for Better Health

Hong-ki’s medical team advised him to change his diet and reduce alcohol and e-cigarette use. His current habits, including greasy takeout, may worsen the condition.

“This isn’t just a simple skin issue—it’s a disease that disrupts your entire life. Catching it early is crucial,” he emphasized.

Despite his struggles, Hong-ki remains active in music. With upcoming festivals and performances, he is prioritizing his health to avoid flare-ups.

Fans Show Support

Viewers and fans expressed deep sympathy after hearing his story. Many praised his strength and shared their own experiences with chronic illnesses.

“It must have been so hard for him to hide this for so long. We support you, Hong-ki!” wrote one fan.

Another added, “His honesty helps raise awareness about this rare condition. More people need to know about it.”
