The final battle for Hawkins has become Netflix’s biggest television event. Stranger Things 5 set a major new record for the streaming service by attracting 59.6 million views globally in its first five days, making it the most-watched premiere ever for an English-language Netflix series.
The first four episodes of the season debuted on November 26, 2025, at 5 p.m. PT, and immediately shot to the number one spot on Netflix in 90 different countries. This massive opening successfully broke the previous record held by the first season of Wednesday, which had roughly 56 million views in its initial four days. Only the second season of the Korean series Squid Game has had a stronger debut on the platform overall.
The incredible audience turnout caused a brief technical problem on launch night, with many fans reporting crashes as they tried to log on. Even though Netflix increased its bandwidth by 30 percent ahead of the premiere, the surge in demand was so intense it temporarily overwhelmed the service for some users. Social media quickly filled with frustrated posts from viewers eager to start watching after a three-year wait.
The Scale of a Global Hit
The numbers show a huge increase in interest from the show’s last season. Stranger Things Season 4 opened with about 22 million views in its first three days in 2022. That means Season 5’s debut of 59.6 million views over five days represents an increase of roughly 171 percent. Beyond the new episodes, the show achieved another first for Netflix: all four previous seasons of Stranger Things entered the platform’s weekly Top 10 list at the same time. The first season was the third most-watched show for the week.
Series creators Matt and Ross Duffer shared their reaction in a statement: “The sheer number of fans who have already watched Volume 1 is staggering — the response has been more than we ever could have dreamed”. They thanked the fans for keeping the show popular during the long gap between seasons and highlighted the efforts of the thousands of people who worked on the production.
How Netflix Built Anticipation for the Final Season
Netflix and the show’s creators worked for months to build excitement for the final chapter. A global marketing push included fan events in 28 cities across 21 countries, starting in Italy at the end of October. In Los Angeles, over 50,000 people participated in a “One Last Ride” bike event on Melrose Avenue just before the premiere. The show was also featured in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with a float.
Brand partnerships were everywhere, from special editions of Gatorade and Eggo waffles to collections at major retailers like Target, Walmart, and LEGO. The season’s fictional radio station, WSQK, was even recreated as a pop-up experience in New York City. Netflix has also planned theatrical screenings of the series finale on December 31 and January 1 in over 500 movie theaters across the U.S. and Canada.

The final season is being released in three parts. Volume 1, which contains the first four episodes, is available now. Volume 2, consisting of three new episodes, will be released on Christmas Day, December 25. The final episode of the entire series will then debut on Netflix on New Year’s Eve, December 31. Each release happens at 5 p.m. PT.
The official summary for the season sets the stage: “The fall of 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna… The final battle is looming — and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before”. The entire main cast returns, including Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, and Finn Wolfhard, alongside new cast member Linda Hamilton. Following the final episodes, Netflix will continue expanding the franchise with an animated series called Stranger Things: Tales From ’85.
