Leonardo DiCaprio was honored with the Desert Palm Achievement Award at the Palm Springs International Film Awards gala on January 3, 2026, but was notably absent from the ceremony. The Oscar-winning actor could not attend in person due to unexpected travel disruptions caused by restricted airspace, a consequence of the developing geopolitical situation in Venezuela.
What Award Was Leonardo DiCaprio Set to Receive?
Leonardo DiCaprio was selected to receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actor. The Palm Springs International Film Society gives this award to recognize an actor for their exceptional performance in a film that has been met with significant critical acclaim.
The award was for his role as a former radical named Bob in director Paul Thomas Anderson‘s film, One Battle After Another. In the movie, DiCaprio’s character lives off-grid with his daughter. He is forced to confront his past when an old nemesis resurfaces and his daughter goes missing.
The festival’s chairman, Nachhattar Singh Chandi, said DiCaprio delivers a “riveting and emotionally charged performance” in the film. He also praised the actor for his long career of bringing “emotional depth, artistic integrity, and fearless commitment to every role”.
This award is historically significant during awards season. Many past recipients have later won the Academy Award for Best Actor or received an Oscar nomination in the same year. Past winners include Bradley Cooper, Colin Farrell, Cillian Murphy, and Brad Pitt.
Why Was DiCaprio Absent from the Ceremony?
DiCaprio could not travel to the event in Palm Springs, California, due to sudden and widespread flight restrictions. He was vacationing on the island of St. Barts in the Caribbean during the New Year holiday and was unable to secure a flight out.
The travel issues stemmed from a major international event. On the morning of the gala, January 3, the United States government announced military action in Venezuela. This included the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolรกs Maduro. The geopolitical incident caused significant disruptions to air traffic control systems across the Southern California region.
The Palm Springs International Airport confirmed the problems publicly. They posted a statement saying an “FAA air traffic control issue” was impacting the entire region’s airspace. For a period, all departing flights were placed under a “ground stop,” meaning they could not take off. Although the ground stop was later lifted, major delays continued, preventing DiCaprio and likely others from arriving on time.
A spokesperson for the Palm Springs International Film Festival released an official statement on the situation: โLeonardo DiCaprio is unable to join us in person tonight due to unexpected travel disruptions and restricted airspace. While we will miss celebrating with him in person, we are honored to recognize his exceptional work”.
How Was the Actor Honored in His Absence?
Even though DiCaprio was not physically present, the festival made sure he was part of the evening. His co-stars from One Battle After Another, Teyana Taylor and Chase Infiniti, took the stage to present the award on his behalf and paid tribute to him.
Following their remarks, the gala played a pre-recorded video acceptance speech from DiCaprio. In his speech, the actor talked about the power of movies and his early love for cinema. He recalled going to the Vista Theater in Los Angeles as a child with his father.
โSitting in that dark room with my father,โ DiCaprio said, โwatching something bigger than myself, I realized how deeply movies can affect all of us. At some point, a film has rearranged who we are. That feeling is why weโre here todayโ.
He also used the moment to make a point about the film industry, emphasizing the importance of theatrical movies. โMovies are still meant to be experienced, together, in a theatre. Right now, that belief matters more than everโฆ But movies still matter, not content, but cinema. Stories made by people meant to be shared in a dark room in a communal experienceโ.
